Well...all my draconequus designs are heavy-handed in symbolism of what the given character represents. Mortimer is a raven plus a horse (beast of burden), and also a parody of life so he and Vita are pretty similar in basic appearance (antlers, bird claws, hooves, wings...).
Or if you're making a pony NextGen with Discord plus {other character}, I would think more about their personality and take inspiration from that. Maybe they're a happy kid so they'd be canary-yellow and sing like a songbird, or if they're usually unassuming but are kinda imposing when you get them mad, maybe take cues from a monocled cobra.
Or if you're just making a draconequus OC for the hell of it think about cohesion, dear God. Stripes and spots are great, but (and this might just be personal opinion) having one striped leg and one spotted leg but stripes and spots nowhere else in the design, makes it look like the stripes and spots are just stuck on as an afterthought.
also the second point about thinking about their personality more than their design. Unless your intent is to have this big brute of a draconequus who is actually a pacifist and whose favorite thing to do is knit ugly sweaters with mom on the weekends.

I've drawn up a ponyfied Sheogorath, so kind of the spirit of madness. And have you played any of the elder scrolls? The Draconequus kind of seem like Daedric Princes, and the Alicorns are the Aedra. And there doesn't seem to be many 'good' draconequus, meaning they symbolize positive things...! Ooohoh, so making a Draconequus of order (Jyggalag)!!!

pretty interesting concept. i always viewed draconequs as entities of chaos, but of variations of chaos. discord is, well, discord, cuasing abberration and imbalance. such as forcing the sky to rain chocolate milk or twist a ponies to an alternate personality.
an oc i made of this variety is Catacysm, who represents the chaos of disasters. presumably more powerful than discord, yet somehow more...... vulnerable than him, he exists to trigger terrible disasters should they be needed, either to create a great shift of power to environment, though what triggers him to destroy is.......... uncertain at best. both the greatest of sinners and the purest of saints become victims of his power.

I actually have a draconequus in the works named Cataclysm :V Embodiment of War/Disaster, and he generally causes natural disasters and/or sows the seeds of war, and is often called on by Oblivion to help in destroying worlds. BUT he's actually a pretty friendly guy despite what he does

the creature i designedi s more intersted in sustaining worlds than destroying them. stagnation is dangerous and he ensures that no one force reamins forever. he is less intersted in destruction itself and more keeping things in motion in the world. when he unleashes a tornado upon a kingdom, he is likely destroying a kingdom that is very corrupt and has lived too long as he deems it. when a floods happens to drown the crops, it is him weakening some government and or order that he believes is too powerful. he does not cause war, but he needs not to. the beings would go to war themselves.
he despises discord because discord brings stagnation as well. his chaos stops any flow and makes the world flow back in on itself. have it that in the past he kept discord at bay and tried many, many times to kill him, and came closer each time. however he was stopped by some foolish unicorn wielding a blade of white and order. the unicorn was killed in seconds, but not before impalingΒ the draconequs. though wehther or not it killedh im is unknown, as no one had the courage to try and remove the blade from the corpse. even as his form decayed away they left it there.
though also have a more subdued idea of draconequs. no creation thingies or anything. discord is powerful but i noted he had to use a force outside his power to tr and defeat the regal sisters. they are rare and represent some chaotic or disorderly force. i did some research via google, and found that it seems draconequs might refer to old meichevious beings.
the only two other known drconequs are Depravity and Lust. Lust is quite powerful, albeit weaker than the regal sisters, and enjoys to cause perversion and sexuality to run out of control. Depravity, out of the four, is the sole truly EVIL draconqus. he revels in suffering, pain, even death. however he is not very strong. he might be around chrysalis's level of strength, though as a draconequs he is hard to kill. he often works in teh shadows, targeting large populations and doing his best to corrupt them.
his mo is causing carnal things to run rampant, to have rage dominate decision, and often uses narcotics to further his goals. Lust utterly despises Depravity, belieiving her corrupts her beloved perversions with violence and death. Discord does not even know he exists, and neither do the regal sisters. he is the most cautiuos and cowardly, yet perhaps the most clever.

I'm thinking there's a reaper for every world, that takes the form of the highest sentient species of that world (like the human world would have a humanoid reaper, the pony world would have a pony-like reaper, etc.).
