Wow, this is good! And you did this on sketchbook mobile? Do you have any speed paintings or tutorials? Because I can't seem to find any professional work like yours for sketchbook mobile to look for for help lol

Ah, sorry but this one was only half sketchbook mobile - finished off in photoshop
It's totally doable in sb mobile but takes much longer (for me) because of the low number of layers you can use.
I don't know of any tutorials but my advice is do a sketch on one layer, a rough plan for colors/shading on another layer, then use the rest of the layers to tackle one section at a time and merge them as you go along.

Nice work dude, you know I love a bit of scifi neon action!Β
Also, had to laugh at 'special shock-absorbing space rubber'

Who can resist a bit of neon! And who can resist using moon-science to excuse design blunders!

Moon science explains everything. Also, quantum stuff...*continues eating jelly nonchalantly*

Another excellent masterpiece! What are you your steps to color in the upper leg part? Do you start with a solid color then do a gradient fill and then use the airbrush to provide the edge and center highlights? I'm always amazed at your soft blends and sharp edges.

Thanks man! Yeah thats basically it but I use the airbrush rather than a gradient fill because you can get a bit more control that way.

Thank you for the details. I will have to try that. I tried using the airbrush for gradient but I guess I don't have the patience. I have learned to use the airbrush fir some shadowing and highlights but not at your level. Any pointers you will share? ...and how do you pick your color pallet?

Basically with the airbrush if it's big I keep it light and I increase the opacity as it gets smaller and more detailed.
I don't really think about colors as much as I should. I'm picturing sketches in color while I do them and then I just try and match what I had in mind. Usually I need to make changes

Thank you for the details. I'm going to try this technique of relying mostly on the airbrush and see if I can match your quality. How do you keep your edges clean? Do you leverage the lasso tool?

griffinator In reply to cartoonstudy [2015-07-07 18:59:43 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, some bits are lasso but most of the time I just use a hard edged, solid brush (and keep using undo until I get a decent line )

Now I can relate that suggestion... I use the airbrush often and hard brushes.. I just need to perfect it to get the clean results you have. I only have Illustrator and Sketchbook Pro (Desktop) to work with so I may be limited.

Yeah, for this particular style of coloring I'd say you're a bit limited there. Β It's totally doable in Sketchbook but Photoshop has the benefit of being able to apply a mask to a group of layers which makes the process a bit less laborious.

cartoonstudy In reply to griffinator [2015-07-09 00:25:26 +0000 UTC]
I can see how having a mask that goes over two or more layers could be helpful. I'm going to put that feature suggestion in the sketchbook pro request box... who knows.

I like the shading you did on her thighs to show that they are round and the material has shine. I like the choice of colors. Her knee caps ... if she fell ... those things would hurt her, not help her.

Haha, yeah - but they're made out of special shock-absorbing space rubber so... she'd be fine... Β Β
