Crane’s Scarecrow mask is made of bits and pieces of roadkill skin sewn together. His costume has not been washed since it was first designed. As a result, it exudes a putrid smell of sweat, dirt, rotting flesh and chemicals.
Residues of fear toxin are deeply soaked into the fabrics causing micro hallucinations to people standing in arm's reach of Crane’s Scarecrow.

THREE IMAGINARY BOYS
Although he had suspicions of being part of a system, Joanthan has been officially diagnosed with DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) during his first stay in Arkham. He is unsure of how many alters he shares the body with and doesn’t have excellent communication with the ones he knows of. So far, only four of them have managed to come in contact together : Ichabod, Leslie, Jezebel & the Scarecrow.
Jonathan’s switches are usually hard to spot and few people can actually tell the difference between him, Jezebel and Ichabod.
Who fronts most ? Jonathan is the host but Ichabod comes front quite often too.
Negative triggers : Crows (although Jonathan somewhat got over it after he started assuming his Scarecrow persona), children cries, tall women, whistle noises, a persistent feeling of hunger, gastric disorders (nauseas & vomiting), suffocation, water (oceans, lakes, pools, a full bathtub or even a full sink can provoke a switch), swearing.
Positive triggers : Tight spaces, hedgehogs, high-calorie food, books
THE SCARECROW
Function : Persecutor, gatekeeper
The Scarecrow is the hardest alter to deal with, for obvious reasons. It was given the role of Grandmother Keeny’s henchman, taking offensive action against the other alters to prevent them from blabbing about the abuse happening at home, punishing them each time they ‘crossed a line’. Contrary to popular beliefs, The Scarecrow rarely comes front and when it does, it’s only harmful to the system. Like most persecutor alters, the Scarecrow is not evil but rather a misguided protector. By keeping Jonathan in the dark, the Scarecrow believes it’s protecting him from further abuses.
Because Grandmother Keeny would make use of an old whistle to call Jonathan out to order, whistling noises have the effect of instantly bringing The Scarecrow front. It is one of the reasons why Jonathan unconsciously avoids getting too close to any kind of sports field, or parade.
The Scarecrow is behind a certain number of suicide attempts, including a particularly nasty one where it tried to cut open the body’s neck over a kitchen sink.
Important note : As a supervillain, Jonathan tries to emulate the Scarecrow by mimicking his appearance and demeanor in order to gain a sense of control over his worst fear. Jonathan dressing up as the Scarecrow is still Jonathan, not the Scarecrow.
TRIVIAS
Jonathan is painfully ashamed of his redneck heritage and thrives to be perceived as a man of culture : although he spent a fortune on a piano during one of his manic phases, he’s only learned to play ‘Home sweet home’, ironically enough.
When he’s drunk, his southern accent is more noticeable.
When he was still a professor at Gotham’s University, he once switched with his child alter in the middle of a lecture because he had felt hungry for too long : confusion ensued pretty quickly when Leslie came front and gobbled the board’s chalks in front of a hundred students.
Moments where his brain isn’t particularly stimulated often lead to a dissociative state, thus Jonathan often gets lost while walking. Nicknamed ‘the walking dead’ by his students. Often seen circling the university like a lion in a cage.
He’s prone to stomach ulcers because of his anxious nature, excessive consumption of caffeine and general awful lifestyle.
Easily hyper-aroused, overstimulation leading to fits of anger during which he can no longer use proper speech and enters in a muteness state.
Arkham’s inmate with the highest number of suicide attempts : 8 in total.
Jonathan and the Scarecrow are both prone to extremely violent episodes of self-harm.
