History: By the dawn of the 21st Century, humanity could be forgiven for thinking they had seen it all. Be it alien dragons, undersea empires, or rogue AI, mankind prevailed again and again. These victories engendered confidence. Confidence engendered complacency. Even the laser-like focus of Commander Gordon and G-Force waned. Had anyone been paying close enough attention, they might have seen the machinations of Baphomet before it was too late.
In 1953, the Cosmos were alerted to an attack on Infant Island by an unknown adversary. They arrived too late and found the brutalized corpse of Mothra amidst the carnage of a terrible battle. Husks of dozens of Gimantids and Spiga littered the battlefield, and evidence of dark magic could be felt by Cosmos sages. It appeared that Mothra died slowly, and her magical essence was drained. The purpose of the attack, and the identify of the mastermind behind it, were never discovered. Fortunately, Mothra’s egg survived the melee. The larva hatched and immediately began its metamorphosis – uncommon in the monster moth’s lifecycle. It was this new, young monster which rallied Godzilla and Kong to face a coming threat from beyond the stars. What the Cosmos didn’t know is that the late Mothra’s body was the instrument used by this dark force to summon the space monster to Earth.
Scattered sightings of humans wearing strange deer skulls peppered the historical archives of G-Force and The Authority spanning decades, but no real significance was ever gleaned from these reports. No meaningful effort was ever undertaken to investigate the skulls by any organization until the twilight years of the twentieth century. Monarch – a monster research, containment, and defense organization formed as a subdivision of the United States Navy – began closely investigating magical phenomena after the Gabara Incident in the 1980s. They discovered that the release of Gabara was just the latest undertaking spearheaded by an insidious death cult spanning hundreds of thousands of years. The connecting tissue was found in the form of the deer skulls – or, rather, deer skull. Though Monarch were the first to link the deer skull to the activities of this mysterious death cult, G-Force were the ones who found it. G-Force operatives investigating Gabara’s temple discovered dozens of dead Pulgasar – believed by the Cosmos to be responsible for the Nightmare Oni’s release – recovered the skull and stored it away in their evidence vault on Monster Island where it sat undisturbed for years.
While the skull faded from the attention of the powers that be, dark magical forces were hard at work orchestrating the skull’s release. Unbeknownst to anyone, the evidence vault guards slowly fell under the sway of the skull. They were maneuvered like chess pieces on a board, working methodically to bring an influential G-Force operative under the skull’s control. Miki Saegusa’s youth and naivete and position of power within the organization made her a prime target, and eventually she, too, was enthralled. In t early 2000s, a mind-controlled Miki used her clearance to enter G-Force’s most heavily guarded underground levels, download a copy of Mechagodzilla’s code from its preserved head onto a mobile drive, take it offsite, and upload it to the Internet, freeing the malevolent AI upon the world once again.
It would be years before any new threat from Mechagodzilla materialized, but in the meantime the skull’s plan continued on. With Miki and a larger collection of G-Force personnel under its control, the skull sought a new host – one slightly larger than the humans it now controlled. During the Devonian Civil War in 2012, Earth’s monsters were called to defend coastal cities along the Pacific Ocean to beat back any opportunistic Devonian invasion attempts. Godzilla’s adoptive son, Junior, was tasked with defending Monster Island’s southern shores, closer to G-Force’s base of operations. With G-Force’s full attention focused on the turmoil at the bottom of the sea, the mind-controlled operatives were able to exfiltrate the skull from custody and delivered it to Junior. The young monster quickly fell under the skull’s influence. Through magical means unknown to science, the skull increased in size, allowing Junior to place it on his head.
Baphomet was reborn.
Baphomet’s human thralls summoned Zone Fighter to Monster Island from his base on the moon, bringing its plan to fruition. After a fierce battle, Baphomet brutally defeated Zone Fighter by cutting off his arm and draining the alien of his coveted Zone Energy. Powerless and grievously wounded, Baphomet nearly struck the killing blow before Mothra, Manda, and King Caesar intervened. The trio was outmatched by the supercharged Baphomet. Only by the final sacrifice of Zone Fighter was the skull dislodged from Junior’s head, allowing the three mystic monsters to envelop it in a magical shield, cutting off its influence over its human victims. The skull was relocated under heavy guard and magical escort by the Cosmos and the magical monster triad to Gabara’s temple. A twenty-mile zone of no access by land, sea, or sky was imposed around the temple and was enforced by the Gotengo’s new sister ship, Éclair.
Godzilla and Jet Jaguar mourned their brother in arms, and Zone Fighter was interred on the moon. Eventually, life slowly returned to normal. Except, that is, for Miki. Nightmares and visions plagued her sleep, and memories of Baphomet left behind in her mind haunted her waking hours. She would carry this psychically imbued anguish for years.
Personality: Baphomet is not an Oni. It is not a monster, it is not an alien, and it is not a human. Whatever Baphomet is, or whatever it once was, is unknown to science or magic. Despite its unknown origins, Baphomet’s motives were learned by Miki during her time under its control. In a primordial era lost to time, Baphomet achieved the dream of countless men who followed him – immortal life. Its physical form discarded, the soul of Baphomet was bound to an indestructible skull. Millions of years passed, and the immortal Baphomet realized the curse of this achievement. Life everlasting eroded the aspects of life which made it worth living. Civilizations rose and fell in predictable cycles; participation in, or conquest of which grew less interesting as time wore on. Death was preferable, but Baphomet lacked the knowledge or means to end its own life.
Not until the First Age, millions of years after attaining immortality, did Baphomet discover the key to its undoing. Immortality was seized from the purest, darkest magic borne out of a ritual of mass death. Only by destroying magic itself could Baphomet finally be released from its gift. But the death of magic would be no easy task. Earth’s magic was tied to the planet and all its lifeforms. The only way to destroy magic would be to destroy all life on the planet, or to destroy the very planet itself. Baphomet attempted both during the First Age, though it was unsuccessful. For the first time in eons, Baphomet has a cause worth fighting for – total annihilation of the planet and all life on it, if only to finally embrace death once and for all time.
Millions of years spent largely in isolation, ruminating about its curse has left Baphomet cold and indifferent to life. With its goal now clear, and believing it is closer than ever to attaining it, Baphomet’s indifference has warped into a malicious enthusiasm for taking life. Anyone or anything unfortunate enough to get in Baphomet’s way is discarded. Worse still is the fate of any being Baphomet deems useful to its cause.
Powers/Abilities
Intelligence: Over the eons, Baphomet has absorbed the knowledge of dozens of civilizations. Given the planet’s tendency to favor organisms with bilateral symmetry and quadrupedal limb disposition in the evolutionary process, and the further tendency of humanoids to rise to prominence among them, Baphomet has mastered techniques to capture, torture, and kill virtually any creature that exists on Earth. By psychically ripping information from the minds of its adversaries, Baphomet is well-versed in mathematics, physics, psychology, and the sciences of civilization such as agriculture, irrigation, and economic principles. All of this knowledge and more is wielded with surgical precision to dismantle its enemies and work towards its ultimate goal.
Overshadowing/Influence Projection: Baphomet can either outright control living creatures or, with higher functioning sapient beings, subtly influence them to pursue objectives beneficial to Baphomet. Magical barriers can disrupt this influence when projected from the inert skull, but Baphomet’s hold is absolute when the skull is worn by a host.
Telepathy: This power can be used to read minds and thoughts and project messages, thoughts, and even feelings. Unlike Cosmos telepathy, Baphomet uses this power to overshadow or influence subjects. It is not known what the effective range of this power is, if there even is a limit. By using the late Mothra’s body as a projector, Baphomet was able to cast a message through her deep into space, summoning Ghidorah from thousands of lightyears away.
Size changing: While Baphomet itself possesses no corporeal form, it is tied to an indestructible skull. Baphomet can change the size of this skull to fit on the head of nearly any target, be it man or monster. It is not known if Baphomet can change the skull’s shape to resemble some other object. And though only seen in nightmares of surviving victims, Baphomet’s skull may be able to project tentacles and arthropodal legs to move without the assistance of a host, though this has never been observed.
Energy Projection: When Baphomet’s skull sits on the head of a host, that host’s body serves as a conduit to dark magic. Baphomet’s extremely long life has also allowed it to master the dark arts. It is thought that Baphomet prefers to subtly manipulate its environment rather than actively change it so as to not draw too much attention to itself. When direct involvement is required, Baphomet seems to prefer direct projections of magical energy, taking the form of glowing green plasma bolts.
Fragarach: Named after a sword from Irish mythology which always dealt a mortal blow, the name of this blade was one of Baphomet’s countless memories left in Miki Saegusa’s mind. Baphomet can summon Fragarach from thin air and it is wielded with the skill of a master swordsman. Given Baphomet’s ability to change the size of its skull helm, it was thought that it could also change the size of the blade, though this was never observed.
The countless horrors inflicted by Baphomet would be enough to keep anyone awake at night, but that was not what horrified Miki so profoundly. Baphomet had summoned King Ghidorah to Earth, presumably so that the space dragon would destroy the planet thus granting Baphomet the sweet release of death. But how would Baphomet have known Ghidorah was out there in the void of space to begin with? Working through the memories, Miki made a sickening, horrifying revelation. That information was given to Baphomet by Ghidorah. A different Ghidorah. This one had battled a terrifying, powerful monster on a primordial Earth so long ago the moon did not yet exist. This ancient Ghidorah was defeated, and the pieces of its dismembered body were carried across the globe with the shifting of the tectonic plates. But the mind of a dead god does not die so easily. The ancient Ghidorah was discovered by Baphomet in the Hollow Earth. By prying into the sliver of extraterrestrial consciousness still remaining, Baphomet that there was not just one Ghidorah, or even two. There were thousands, all hunting the galaxy for life-bearing worlds.
With two of these creatures defeated on the same planet, it would not be long before the others took notice…
