You wait there so beautifully

Watching me stumble with that

Tiny smile that I find so dear

I would do anything to see that smile

Just a little closer up

But as soon as I scale the rocky incline

You're further away

On a taller mountain

Still smiling coyly

My muse, my art

So unattainable and tantalizing

As long as I'm not falling backwards

I have hope enough to move forward

One foot in front of the other

My lonely footsteps echo

In cavernous expanses

But as I look behind

To see where I have been

I see two steps of footprints

Where only one should have been
