Description
This is a character model created from a concept by Joe Madureira. Apparently this was a character in a game called, Dragonkind, started back before Joe Mad founded Vigil.Character model: 6000 triangles
Weapon model 296 triangles
1x 1024 diffuse map
Modeled with Maya and textured with Bodypaint and Photoshop.
This model was featured in my diffuse texturing tutorial. One of many available for free here: [link]
Check him out animated by my friend and former coworker, Issam Zejly: [link]
(it's the 3rd clip in the latest demo reel)

Do you mind sharing how you layout your unwrap????
They are so neatly arranged, occupying everypossible space and seems to worry almost nothing about stretching and stuffs.

This looks very cool, but the animation video site isn't showing me anything. 3:
Just says 'coming soon' when I click it. Really wanted to see this thing animated too.

Haha, looks like the image was taken down. I was kind of interested in seeing how they tried to pass it off. Thanks a lot for helping setting things straight! I guess some people just like attention by posting stuff like that.

The image was just like yours but had the "Riot Games" logo in the bottom right of the top section (under the wing) and they took out the "original concept by Joe Madureira" and his art, just leaving it blank. MS Paint could have easily done the job but I remembered your model in an instant, truly amazing job

According to Google Translate, I think you're asking about whether or not the model is available for download.Β Unfortunately, I haven't made it publicly available at this time.

So how much is this Maya program? This is such a well-done and detailed model; it's astounding!

Thanks. This kind of modeling can be done in almost any 3d modeling application. Maya is actually quite expensive, but I believe there is a free student version available for download from the Autodesk web site.

I don't know what the specific requirements are, but you can see for yourself: [link]
You have to sign up and make an account. I've not tried it myself so I don't know what the process is.

Hard to say as I only worked on it nights and weekends sporadically. Maybe less than 2 weeks total?

That's amazing. Did you do just the texturing or is the model your creation as well? (I'm assuming that you did both though)

AWESOME!!!! But how does he keep his balance? Not being sarcastic. The art is fantastic, but every time I see something like these ankles in a pic, I have to wonder if the character/creature has an organic gyroscope.
I faved it, so you know I love it.

Thanks, that's an interesting question. I guess he's standing on the balls of his feet more like a dinosaur than a bird. It was probably designed this way for a more interesting silhouette.

Algoroth In reply to Nocturnal-Link [2011-09-24 01:51:55 +0000 UTC]
Yes! But how does he WALK? I'm asking, not being a wise-ass. Are the ankles really flexible? Can they be straightened at all?
I'm the kind of person...idiot, if you want...who asks crazy questions. If this aquilan warrior was real, it looks like there would be a constant flexing of both knees and ankles, strenuous enough to cause him pain. He looks like he might be a saltator, a jumper. Is he?

Nocturnal-Link In reply to Algoroth [2011-09-26 00:37:04 +0000 UTC]
We ourselves are actually made to be constantly flexing muscle when we run and walk - not landing on our heels and shooting the shock up into our knees... we rest those muscles when we sit and lay, which I'm sure this creature would have no problems doing.

Algoroth In reply to Nocturnal-Link [2011-09-26 01:05:53 +0000 UTC]
Good points, but...this being looks like those tendons, joints, and muscles and ligaments are stretched virtually full time, with no compensatory aspects visible. Sloths hang upside down all the time, but, if I remember right, the bones in their hands cannot open all the way, so it takes little energy, comparatively, for it to dangle all the time.
Avian Defender's stance indicates all-the-time full flexure. Sort of like you or I were to "stand" all the time in a full squat.
Also, the muscles in his back and abdomen would always be flexed as long as he is standing. And we have yet to address how he walks. Yes, Avian Defender is a fantasy creature. I just like to see fantasy creatures be well-designed for whatever they're doing, unless magic/force-fields/mechanical (robotic?) aids take up the slack, as in those 'new' robotic prosthetic strength suits.
Pay no attention to me if you don't want to. I'm just putting my two cents in.

Sorry I accindently hit the wrong button before I was done.
FYI - The game engine you put the model into should and will come with a retopolgy or tringulate feature so you don't have to model tris. When your modeling aslo double click the edge loop after first hitting F10- buy doing this if the edgeloop you selceted is consistant it will select the whole edge loop. That is a good thing. It will improve your modeling skills even further.

Thanks. There are actually specific reasons for triangulating certain areas. The polygon count is not high enough that I should be striving for all quads.
