How to remove non-photo blue lines in GIMP WITHOUT a plug-in! My first tutorial!
This is something I made because I couldn't find any tutorials out there that didn'tΒ involve downloading a plug-in to get CMYK. I made this tutorial for GIMP 2.8.6; I'm not sure if it works on other versions, but if it does, great!In order to get rid of the non-photo blue lines, you have to turn the image to CMYK, which is "supposedly" only available on Photoshop, and "plug-in only" in GIMP. Not working with me! So, I hope you enjoy this tutorial, and I reeeallly hope it helps you!
BTW, the example picture was just a reallyΒ quick sketch of Ethan (one of my characters from Willie and Jake) I had done to test out the non-photo pencil the first time I had gotten it.

This is Awesome! I have been reading all the tutorials on how to do this in photoshop, but really didn't want to buy it, so when I found this post I downloaded GIMP and gave it a try. Thanks for posting this.
I have one problem. It worked perfectly as you said for my blue pencil, but my red pencil lines were still there. I would think if I deselected all the layers except black the red line would be gone too. I used to only use blue, but one forum suggested I try red and I really like it now. I do my construction lines and sketches in red.

I'm glad that this tutorial helped with the blue lines! However, I've never personally used a red pencil for those type of sketches. CMYK is really just for to get rid of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (black), so the blue would fit perfectly into the cyan layer. However, the red couldn't quite stay in the magenta layer alone, so I could understand why it would still be seen. I think I might be able to help, though!
I've been working on this picture that happens to have red lines in it, so I went ahead and tested on it to see what I could do. What I found was that going to Colors> Components> Decompose and then keeping the setting to RGB (or RGBA; you'll have to fiddle around with it), I had the red in its own layer. I'm not sure how it'll work with your picture, but I hope that that might help you a bit (you're probably going to have to use the image that has the blue lines already removed)!

thank you so much for the reply. I did some reading and you are absolute right. The black is composed of half the red layer, so that's why my red lines don't disappear completely. I will absolutely go try what you suggested, as it makes perfect sense that only RGB would allow me to remove the red lines. I of course would have to do it in two steps. However I am considering ditching the red pencil and just sketching all in blue as your method in CMYK works SOOOO well.
