Description
This piece was inspired when I was walking in the rain.The text on the piece are the lyrics to a Japanese song "上を向いて歩こう" ("I look up when I walk") by Kyu Sakamoto (click here for wikipedia on the artist ).
However, a more well-known title of the song is "Sukiyaki" by the music group "4PM" (and other groups - click here for wikipedia on the song "Sukiyaki" )
I actually love rain and wanted a more joyous feel to this piece, but I guess my macabre fascination (or is it my monochromatic color sense?) took over and this piece became what my wife calls "gothic emo."
I had started writing a different, original prose in Japanese to go along with this piece, but in the end decided that the lyrics to this song is more appropriate for the feel of the art.
It also fits *sparou 's description of the song: "The song sounds happy, but is actually very sad." (paraphrase). Hence why he's smiling in the picture.
Tidbits about the artwork:
1. Yes, I suck at drawing hands - I'm learning x.x;;;
2. Yes, there isn't really rain and the character isn't wet... I couldn't figure out how to add rain without ruining the current feel (i.e. whatever modification I did to this picture brought about lots of complains from my wife - hence it stays 'cuz she likes it as is).
3. In case you haven't figured it out, the lyrics on the left hand side is Kanji, the middle is English (duh), and the right is Hiragana, but they're all the same thing.
4. The full size version is sized to be 800 pixels in height just in case I feel like using this for my wallpaper.
5. Don't bother asking how much time I spent on it, the answer is "way too much time."
6. Yes, I should be studying for my finals instead x.x;;;;
Disclaimer: If I'm breaking any sort of copyright laws by putting up the lyrics, I apologize sincerely as none is intended. Please feel free to let me know and I'll remove the text from the piece (and maybe put up my own aforementioned prose x.x;; ).
Addendum to the disclaimer (after reading the text while looking at the overall pic):
I will not be hold responsible if you feel any form of depression, melancholy, stress, pain, sado-masochism, etc. etc. etc. that may come from viewing and/or reading this picture and/or the text in it (respectively). Thank you.

uhm... the lyrics are awesome (even tho it's depressingly sad i really like how it expresses it's hurt/ pain/ sorrow
... makes me want to write something)...
and i think this piece ended up nice... clean and neat... the only thing i want to add is about the color... i felt something is catching my eyes... since from the whole page, the only redish color is his hair... (maybe making it a bit grayish (gray tone) blends his hair better with the rest of the page)... however, if u'r having a different intent for that... it's a different story..
and i do still think the character resembling u... well... no matter what, every artists will put them selves in their art (unconsciously)... if i think more about that... it really pulls me out from telling people i know about my dev.account... (which i only tell a handfull of people as for now)..

Yep, you're right, the hair is meant to be attracting attention
Not sure why, but wanted it that way o.O; Maybe 'cuz I love the feel of the hair... Or maybe 'cuz I don't want monochromatic hair/piece x.x;;;
tx for comment~ ^^

i actually like the calm expression on his face, he seems at peace with the world. the lyrics of the song sounds a little sad, yet i don't see any sadness. everything is calm, he seems to embrace the rain, seems to be perfectly content. so in terms of gesture/pose, you did a good job in expressing yourself, or what you feel about the song. in terms of technique, it's a pretty simple rendering, and although a lot could be improved in the actual drawing itself, i do like the overall composition of the image, the background and the text. well, about the drawing, it's detail stuff, don't worry too much about it, it takes time to learn how to draw hands and things like that. the most important thing is to have an idea that you can actually capture in a drawing... so keep doing that and you'll be fine... the rests come with practice...
about the rain, it is a bit tricky, i haven't really doing a lot of wet effect either, maybe it would involve observing wet fabric and wet hair effect, and add a trickle of water here and there... and for the background, maybe you can cheat with an actual photograph of a place that you like, such as Seattle, ahem... in the midst of rain... and just put that as your background and you're done. ^^

Reading the lyrics while looking at him makes me feel like I'm hurting inside x.x;;;;
....in terms of technique, it's a pretty simple rendering, and although a lot could be improved in the actual drawing itself...
wahhhh!! I spent lots of time on the rendering this time x.x;;; Wanted the colors to be just subtle enough and sorta blend in... But yeah it does end up looking more like cell-style (imo)... Ah well, this just shows the gap between your talent and/or skill and mine
Thankee for the comments ^^ I'll do better next time ^^
