ANOTHER EDIT: Turns out early Charmander art DID have spikes on its back, it's Bulbapedia-gallery official! Found in trivia here [link] and on art such as [link] . Big thanks to *Twarda8the8XanaX for cluing me in.FIRST EDIT: WOW! Wasn't expecting so many responses! Here's some FAQ:
1) DO I REALLY BELIEVE THIS
Answer = Not really, just more than the Kangaskhan one
I think that the developers wanted a sob story to up the creepy/tragic atmosphere of Lavender town and so gave a Silence of the Lambs-esque backstory to one of their species.
2) IS THIS THE MOST LIKELY I COULD COME UP WITH?
Answer = No
This is the more fun and interesting one I could come up with. If I'd wanted hard-to-deny I'd have had the Cubone-Marowak species be into heirlooms so that the Cubone's mother's skull is one that belonged to her, not one that was scooped out from inside her head.
3) MAROWAK WAS ORIGINALLY GOING TO EVOLVE INTO KANGASKHAN
Answer = No
There's NO proof of this from developers. What IS true is that Kangaskhan was one of the first Pokémon to be programmed in and as a result Missingno can evolve into Kangaskhan. Missingno can ALSO evolve into Rhydon, however, and I hear no one claiming that's connected.
[link]
In all likelihood I think the developers would have said by now, at least in the Anime, if this was ever truly intended.
4) WHERE DID THAT CHARIZARD NEST STUFF COME FROM?
Answer = Okay, I made that up. I wanted a communal nest and Cubones as a frequent outcome because Cubones are by far the more common in comparison to Charmanders.
5) AM I COMPLETELY FLATTERED THAT SO MANY PEOPLE LIKE THIS THEORY?
Answer = Yes! Totally!
I thought I'd just get scolded for disagreeing with the oh-so-loved Kangaskhan one.
I guess at the very least I picked the right group to suggest this to, what's not Creepy Pasta-licious about a deformed, rejected and cannibalistic starter Pokémon?
Thank you very much for all the comments (including the curious/sceptical ones, feedback is feedback)!
...
And now back to the original description:
I really don't get the obsession over the Kangaskhan theory (see bottom right of pic for explanation on why). So here's an alternative!
Made worse by how I clearly can't draw Charmanders or Cubones! Heh...
Ah well. If I did a third theory it would be that Cubones start off as a bug Pokémon and that, upon hatching, their mums pass away (spider-style) and the young then eat the body. Yay!
Marrowak: Fits into this theory as some weirdos went on to decide Cubones were cute and encouraged these growth issues, eventually leading to a subspecies with a partial evolution (partial because getting a little taller hardly compares to growing horns/wings).
And if anyone has any reason to believe that baby-Kangaskhan-by-self sprite is OFFICIAL let me know?
...Blahblahblah. Whatever, enjoy.

This is neat--I never thought about this before! But it makes sense--more sense than the Kangaskhan theory because Cubone looks so much like Charmander--and I want to think of this as true (but it is oh so sad!). Saved to my favourites!

It seems that his is a bit on the old side, but I really appreciate the attention to detail in the theory here, at least.

i really enjoyed this theory, just because it builds a really interesting backstory that is more a little more dark and intriguing.
so thank you, i'm going to enjoy this because it's different and sound pretty badass.

Fascinating idea! I should show you my friend idea on why all the Officer Jennys and all the Nurse Joys look the same.

You have fascinating concepts as well, here are my ideas. But they operate on the idea that Pokemon is actually a successor story to Justice League after a cataclysmic disaster.

No not that one etheir, If you watched Pokemon Origins, the skull that Cubone wears is a Maroak's skull.

HareTrinity In reply to GoldenEagleStudios [2015-06-28 21:40:48 +0000 UTC]
Well:
(1) This comic is from 2 years before Pokémon Origins came out, so I think I can be forgiven for not taking that into account.
(2) If a species had it so that every couple could only have 1 child (1 per mother's skull), then the population size would half with every generation. Unless something odd is going on (e.g. the mother having multiple skulls) then the Cubone/Marrowak species pretty much HAS to be part of another species!
Still, I'm glad to hear that Pokémon Origins has put the Kangaskhan theory to rest.

Your welcome.
So where did you get the inspiration for the theory anyway?

HareTrinity In reply to bruiser128 [2015-04-20 12:36:29 +0000 UTC]
I'm... Not actually sure! I guess Cubone just looks a tad Charmandery to me, so when I was getting fed up of the Kangaskhan theory I built upon that.

HareTrinity In reply to bruiser128 [2015-04-20 14:22:08 +0000 UTC]
There's a common myth floating around that Cubone was originally going to be baby Kangaskhan (someone's even edited a Cubone sprite into a baby Kangaskhan as "proof" of this). That it's clearly fake but people believe it annoys me more than it should.

Well it's no different than those creepypasta-esque fanfictions for the MLP: FIM
universe, examples being Dollhouse, Pattycakes, and of course CUPCAKES.

And actually, Beta Rydon does look like Male Kangaskhan.

Also, has Pokemon X and raised a Charmander to Charizard. Can say it does not like its horn-things touched, but other than that it doesn't seem to mind anywhere else.
I like that Amie feature. Lemme see if I have a Cubone/Marowak...

Caught me a Kangaskhan before a few Cubones; raising one to a Marowak.
Named my Box 2 "Cudrome Theory" need to catch a few more mons but for now:
Amie
KANGASKHAN
Loves ear-things touched, sad face touch near baby. Baby more or less copies Kanga momma.
CUBONE
Loves top of skull touched, sad face tough top of bone club.
