Ages ago I realised I liked this colouring/shading style, then promptly never used it again... Then took about a month almost completely off drawing... BACK NOW! And darn if it isn't hard to get back into this...So yes; this is one of my theories I've been spreading about since I quite like it. Figured I should put my pen where my mind is!
Most of the changelings in the last panel have their hind legs out behind them. Hopefully that's not too hard to work out... Also I do know that I'm one of the few partial to that type of background. Oh well.

Normally when a fanon theory tries to give the villain a tragic backstory and/or Freudian Excuse it turns out to be total shit because it detracts far too much from the villain's scare factor, like that garbage with Discord being spurned by Celestia
You managed to avoid that here quite beautifully. Are they jealous? Yes. Do they have a justified reason to be jealous? Yes. Are they still in the wrong for willfully choosing such violent revenge? Yes. Evokes "Sympathy for The Devil", but not to an overwhelming/distracting degree

I would actually love for this to be true, and it makes some sense, but where do their shape shifting capabilities come from? And if they feed off love, why did they want to be left alone?

How did Princess Luna gain the ability to transform into smoke/3 ponies (Shadowbolts)?
Equestria has weird effects on those who live there (also look at greed-Spike), I think it makes a strange sort of sense that being envious of another species and their happiness might result in such changes.
Given it doesn't make a huge amount of sense but I like the idea.
