I found the shell in a gem shop and it had already been sliced in half, probably with a diamond saw used in gem cutting.

the love contrast between the two materials and the shell's really cool... did you just rivet the metal on or how did you fasten it?

Thank you. Apart from the tentacles that wrap around the shell I soldered 4 pins onto the back of the body that extend through the shell and wrap over the back in grooves cut into the ridges of the shell so that the back still sits flat.
