Riding the back roads you might pass shallow streams nourishing the young tree blooms.For it's springtime in Brown County, Indiana. It is important to have dark backgrounds for the purple blooms, as they are quite light and without the deeper colors, they would be too faint to stand out well.
As I couldn't get close enough to isolate the tree, that is without slipping into the stream, I extended my camera's zoom lens, and then further cropped to frame as I wished. Had I not been on the bicycle, I might have used a monopod or possible a longer lens as well, but you use the tools you have, rather than skipping the image altogether.

The redbuds were gorgeous this year, especially around Brown County. What a beautiful photo to highlight the region in spring!

A tranquil scene, nice water colors, greens, and of course the lovely blossoms on the starring attraction. The light on the purple is nice and bright, and like you wrote, stands out against the dark. Sometimes moving slower, walking or riding, gets us out of the car and let's us see the world at a slower pace and without being framed by the windows of an automobile. I spend much time walking when I can, looking down, looking up, composing as I walk. We have finally had 3 days this week (not in a row of course) above 60F here in western Washington, and the trees are greening up, many of the earlier blossoms have washed away. Every year is just a little different than the last.

you live in a wonderful section of America. warm winters, with great respect for the outdoors. perfect except for I-5's busy traffic. funny thing is here in Indiana, we get more rain than you do. the coast is beautiful all the way to California.
