Description 1976 - [King Kong, De Laurentis remake] - The Petrox petroleum corporation sends an exploratory mission to Faro island, picking up the beautiful (but annoying) Dwan from a lifeboat. While on the island the Dwan is kidnapped by the Natives and offered up to Kong.

Kong takes Dwan to his mountain lair, and after a shaky start the two bond with each other. Kong is attacked by a Faro Island Python but easily subdues the beast.

***************

Personally I never was much of a fan of the 76 DeLaurentis Kong remake. I find Jessica Lange's character extremely annoying. Also it's pretty disappointing that there were no dinosaurs on the island. The Giant Snake scene is probably the highlight of the first part of the film, but is all together too brief. However for the time it was made the film shows some technical sophistication.

The Kong suit was a masterpiece and I found the fight with the Snake entertaining, but I agree with what Ray Harryhausen said about the film, and I quote “ it was like a dagger in the ribs to watch “, I saw it in its entirety once, and refuse to watch it again!!!

While definatly the weakest of the two remakes, it's a decent enough movie. If Toho ever gets another chance to remake King Kong vs Godzilla, they should use a suit like the one in this film; it was pretty good.

I just saw this movie today on AMC, even though it's not my favorite version the fight with the python was cool (and just to add this was the first Kong movie I saw when I was just a kid).

The De Laurentis remake was actually the 1st Kong film I ever saw. Shortly after I saw the original, which is of course superior. However I kept going back and forth between versions because while the original had everything (good story, dinosaurs, ect) the girl (Ann Darro (sp)) really turned me off the way she just kept screaming at Kong like an ignorant, unsympathetic bitch. > While Jessica Lang however, developed a bond with the big lovable monkey, and even cries when he get's killed.

But now with the Peter Jackson remake, I get everything I want!

Yeah they really developed the beauty and the beast angle in the 76 remake. In the first one Ann Darrow just acts like a damsel in distress (and really doesn't have much more to her character.) I just wish Jessica Lang would have had better dialog, instead of talking about astrology and other random B.S. She asks Kong what his sign is, ffs. But yeah, the movie is good for the time, much better than other kaiju-type movies made around the same period.

lol You know, as a kid I never knew how full of shit she was in that movie. Then when I watched it again years later I was like "Oh my God, what is she talking about? Is she on drugs or something? Meh, at least she's hot." Ya know? lolz. She got a little better when she was in Cape Fear, though.

You're getting very good with these big battle scenes, as well as the background detail (love the rocks). And the giant python I gather is based on the 1976 film, over the bizarre plesiosaur of the original film?

well thanx, soo um pterosaurs are also covered in hair and the front limbs are also like that of an ungulate mammal (deer, horse, giraffe), and the back are like that of some dinosaurs and birds like velociraptor and the red-crown crane, so it may have been semi-digitigrade (tip-toed, like dinosaurs) but srry about more science crap, just making yr pterosaurs better

Cool! And yep, no dinosaurs is REALLY dissapointing isn't it? On a related note, back when they were making Peter Jackson's version they took a poll of how many people knew that there were dinosaurs in the original King Kong. It turns out, most people had no idea!

DinoHunter2 In reply to Dragonsmana [2009-01-04 00:13:55 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, when Kong came out that was exactly the response I got from my friends. Nobody remembered the dinosaurs at all- one guy even went as far as to say it was idiotic to "randomly add them to the story for no reason". Tsk tsk. What'd everybody do, just fast forward to the part where Kong dies?

Dragonsmana In reply to DinoHunter2 [2009-01-04 01:16:46 +0000 UTC]

I think everyone just reconizes the Empire State building scene as a part of pop culture. I doubt half of em even SEEN the movie. All they really seem to know is: Men go to island. Men find giant ape. Men Capture giant ape after it falls in love with the one woman. Men bring Kong back to NYC. Kong kidnaps girl. Kong climbs building. Kong gets shot, falls of building. Beauty Killed the Beast. END! Sadly, I think thats the case.

DinoHunter2 In reply to Dragonsmana [2009-01-04 01:23:56 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, no doubt. I don't have much room to talk cuz I'm *very* guilty of this myself, but I think a lot of people just talk about famous movies like they know em when they've never even watched five minutes of them. It's really annoying when you think you're talking to someone who likes a movie you do, and then not even halfway through the conversation you figure out that they're making up every word of it and have no idea what you're talking about. Why they can't just say "I never saw that movie" is beyond me.

Dragonsmana In reply to DinoHunter2 [2009-01-04 01:46:55 +0000 UTC]

Ya, and if ya just seen parts of it, just say that! Don't act like you've seen the whole thing! When I was younger I had always heard of King Kong (there is this one monster movie documentay I'm still trying to track down, I saw it once on tv, it was pretty cool. It was almost a history of them. All I can really remember right now is that there was a scene where they talked about and showed a part of a movie about a giant man that during his death by electricity scene actually produced enough light to give the movie color for those brief moments! I think it was War of the Colossal Beast was the movie) when I was younger. But I never really saw it till like 2 years later. As some extra luck they showed Son of Kong right after it.

Wow, did not know about that poll. The Kong / T. Rex fight is like iconic, but I guess it's not as iconic as the Empire State building scene.
