Description My old works I made for C64 demoscene in 1993 or 1994 when I started to paint on computers. All of them were pixel by pixel drawn. Beware that only 136 colours and low resolution could be used then (although C64 could use 16 colours, but some smart coders started to use interlace even on this 8bit machine ). I love these old times when programmers could make with their machines everything.
Download for full view.

Originals like dragon by Luis Royo, Night Winds by Frank Frazetta, skeleton lady by Michael Whelan and are really well known for anybody who's into fantasy illustration and I'm not hiding that.

Ahh, Commodore...

To prawda.
Mysle, ze tworcy 64 nawet nie przypuszczali, co mozna z niego wydusic. Z reszta, ktos to nawet powiedzial. Nie pamietam neistety kto i kiedy, no ale...
Dlatego podziwialem i bede podziwial scenowiczow.
I nadal zyje. Slabnie, ale trwa nadal.
I to jest piekne. Po prawie 25 latach C64 nadal jest wspanialy.
I wciaga nowych ludzi.
Mialem Amige, trafilem na Commodore probujac dowiedziec sie wiecej o ukladach Ami.
No i stoja sobie oba na biurku.
A matka zrzedzi, ze graty trzymam

No you didn't. But if you don't write original artist name - it plagiarizm. If I'd do something like that in my desing colledge they would probably kick me out. So next time be carefull.

girl, check what is written up?
could you? It is not my thing to think about your politic in school... on my own is - if 70% of art is made by you - that means that it is your work. All the true about computer graphic.

Unfortunatelly in 1993 or 1995 on this machine was only 320x200 possible to use. Comparing this to my monitor with 1680x1050 today it's like an icon on desktop, so... I can't see anything either.

I don't know very much about pixel art or its limitations. So I have to say I just like your dragon creature here for exactly how he appears!

hedaard In reply to wynnesome [2008-01-12 10:53:12 +0000 UTC]

I don't know either. I made this years ago on 8bit machine with its limitation. It was really cool to work in such progams like Advanced Art Studio or FLI editor. It wasn't possible to paint like in Painter or other modern software. There were only 16 colors, 320x200 resolution (for 2 colors) and 160x200 resolution (for 16 colors) you could use. But anyway there were many graphicians that could make wounderful pieces of art even with this.

Wow, the more colors, the smaller the image had to be? Is that because the RAM could only handle that much at that time or something? Amazing. I know video game music used to be limited to 4-voices with simple tones as well - and some composers did amazing things to create multi-line compositions for some of the old games, too.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hedaard In reply to wynnesome [2008-01-12 12:01:32 +0000 UTC]

Yes, RAM is one of reasons. The second is graphic chip - it was modern then, now could only make smile on my face. But pssibilities were like that, no other, so people made graphics, music etc with all possible ways. And many of them are cool even now. Still I remember some great musicians like PVCF or JCH from C64 demoscene (they also made music to games) and even today I find them cool.

Sometimes it is amazing what a great artist can do with what we consider primitive tools. For example a photographer who can take a great photo with a not-great camera. Much more important to have talent than fine equipment or advanced technology, though those do help many artists express their talents better!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hedaard In reply to wynnesome [2008-01-12 12:06:41 +0000 UTC]

Yes, and some artists can use their tools in 100% even if the tools are really poor. Really great is not to have expensive tool with lot of possibilities and using it in 1%, but to have poor tool and use it in 100%. I agree that to make great photos is more important to have "an eye" not great camera.

wynnesome In reply to hedaard [2008-01-12 20:00:48 +0000 UTC]

Definitely. I am thankful to have good cameras, lenses and lighting - I think it makes it much easier to learn. Like people who buy their kids a cheap musical instrument that sounds awful and is terribly hard to play - and then wonder why they hate to practice! Sure the ones who can learn to play on that poor instrument are going to be that much more amazing when given a quality instrument - but how many people might be put off completely and never learn because of the unnecessary difficulty put in their way.

I suppose this is a little bit different from looking back on technology that was top of the line at the time and just seems limited compared to what has come about now. But same principle... an artist in that medium had to use it to its fullest. Whereas today we have Photoshop and it does more things than any one person probably ever explores... yet even with that amazing technology, you can use it to magnificent effect, or very crudely.
