Description Iai is a dieing form of sword martial art in Japan, only a very few still practice.

This was my host father's training session with the two in this image and only 1 other there. He is the one with his sword drawn.

It's a very meticulous martial art with few fast movements. Possibly due to this it's popularity has been on the decline.

where did you take this picture? And who was your host father/teacher?

Is Iai similar to kendo? Because I always thought kendo was a (modern?) form of the ancient samurai sword art. But I may be terribly mistaken. : )'

Not at all. Iai is more like yoga, where as kendo is more like whacking each other the head with a stick.

Wonderful photo!

Training to become stronger.

Sorry anime reference

oh! And I liked how you make the photo horizontal and long. It kinds represent the sword, and fits more with the photo.

And what's with the black creeping into the photo by the top, is that an edit?

Yeah it's a grungey edit I added, well it was already there as a shadow, I just made it darker.

Your host father seems cool as shit! Great that you got to tag along and shoot this lesson.

I remember walking down the street in Kyoto... peering into an open gate, and seeing a Kendo Dojo in session. The whole scene felt like it was ripped from an Edo jidai.

He was pretty cool.

I also visited and joined in on a bojitsu lesson at a local high school. was fun.

I like it, but I feel like I want to see it cropped a little more to put more focus on him rather than on the surroundings. I would love to see him more to the left of the image and perhaps zoomed in more to make him larger. As it is now, his sword also goes almost right across the center of the picture, and I think if it were cropped a tiny bit more from the top (though not cutting off the clock) it would be higher up in the image and a slightly better composition. I like the gritty feel of the image. Well done!

I like this image a lot! The composition, the simplicity of the colours and the place itself and just the big free space somehow, it gives a little "alone" feeling somehow despite of the two figures on the picture. Maybe they even add to it, how they are so far from eachother...
I didn't know iaido is getting less popular. But true that where I live kendo is more well-known than iaido, too.

I would certainly like to learn some sort of sword style when I'm in Japan to be honest with you.
spend a few years there learning all sorts of different techniques.

Kendo is fun but probably less useful. iaido focuses on using a sword in real world situations through kata.

I hate kata though, so kendo is more fun

well I'd like to learn it all if I could.
but usefulness seems to be better for me...
but it all starts through the basics of course and I suppose that's where Kendo starts. .-)

Is a shame to see these Japanese martial arts dying out.
Younger generation is only interested in flashy movie type styles these days.
Up to a very few to keep the traditions alive.

doing the katas over and over again gets very boring.
