Description
Arabian horse, A4, Derwent Charcoal Pencils, Reference byAll my life I have hated charcoals. When I was a kid I went to an art school (in freetime) and of course we had to use charcoal! And I never liked it. I've always wanted to add as much detail to my work as possible and charcoal just wouldn't do it... Then, a few months ago I went to a store and noticed this nice looking charcoal pencils from my favourite pencil maker, Derwent. And I decided I should by them. It took a long time before I dared to try them for anything serious, but here is the result! And now I must say I looooove charcoals! They are hard medium to work with and I'm still not 100% comfortable with them, but just think about what you can achieve with them! To this point I've always done my black and white drawings with graphic pencils... but you really can't get the blackest blacks with them. Charcoal can do that for you! The contrast is just mind-blowing.
So, now I will admit I've changed my mind - charcoals are awesome medium and I'm definately going to do more portraits with them.
In addition to paper and charcoal I used paper stomps, kneaded eraser, sharpening tools etc. I didn't expect the art to be great (because this was first try at charcoal since childhood) so I loosely referenced it very quickly in pencil and then started to add some color. It isn't exactly like my reference image, but I like it very much this way.
