Monsters Inc is a Pixar classic, it has an engaging plot, strong humor and wonderful characters. There’s so much to explore in this world, which warranted a sequel. Or in this case, a prequel. We got Monsters University multiple years after the first movie and had Mike and Sully as students in Monsters University. It… exists. It doesn’t have the same impact as the first movie and the dialogue wasn’t even close to being half as good, but I did really like how the film ended. It didn't save the film entirely but at least it had something worthwhile.

Now, we have this show that first came out on Disney+. Taking place after Henry J. Waternoose III's arrest, the Monsters Incorporated are in the middle of transitioning from scary to laughter power. It focuses on a lot of newer characters, the main one being Tylor Tuskmon who just got accepted to working in this company. However he expected to be a scarer, not a jokester. Because of the change, he struggles to fit in and works as a mechanic in the MIFT, Monsters Inc. Facilities Team. You may be wondering, where is Mike and Sulley? Oh they’re still there, however they get the subplots and less screen time than the new monsters, which is disappointing. All the old characters are still enjoyable but the ones introduced for this show are pretty uninteresting and boring, and at times annoying when they make a bad joke. The stories in this show are very simple and have barebones conflicts that can be resolved very easily. This is an even bigger issue when you realize these episodes last over 20 minutes, so it gets boring fast.

    Season 2 update:
Been three years since the last time this show released episodes... which to be honest does sound like a long time for a season of 10 episodes with average show budget, but anyway season 2 is here. Continuing from the events of the last season, we see Tyler being pretty bad at being a jokester and is conflicted on leaving MIFT and instead join Fear Co where he can use his scaring degree to good use. The CEO of Fear Co is Johnny Worthington III, who was the top scare student in Monsters University but now plays a major role in this new season. This time around there's even less of Mike and Sully and more screentime on Tylor and Val. Because Val is discovering her true potential on being a jokester. This season isn't better than season 1, which sounds weird at first because the story is moving a lot more now, while season 1 felt mostly filler and not giving any characters real depth. Season 2 expands more on Tylor and Val specifically however I don't think this season is paced very well. There was a lot of tiptoeing around certain areas such as Johnny rejecting Tylor working for him initially for no real reason other than to make Tylor want the job even more maybe?.. gonna get to that right now. This season was doing... meh up to the final two episodes when it suddenly took a different direction than what it was going for in the first 8 episodes. Johnny beforehand wasn't the nicest person, he was pretty selfish but wasn't outright evil. In the second season I'm under the impression that he's changed since then and is just a reasonable rival to the MIFT. But in the last two episodes it is revealed that he's actually evil the whole time and been planning an elaborate scheme on Tylor. What Johnny likes to say, "Chess", but really the season just became convoluted and more nonsensical as it goes on, such as them bringing Randall back. They give us a reason how Randall returns but its quite impossible how Johnny would know where Randall was at for various reasons, like how he would be able to get to the right door that was already broken and how did Randall even get to communicate to him? This is worse than just plot holes, these final episodes caused the plot THREADS that was building up to be entirely ruined by the forced in stakes and non-mystery.

Look, this show isn’t entirely bad. Season 3 will have Randall play a larger role which I'm not personally excited for at all. But, if you are a huge fan of Monster Inc and just aching for more of it, then go knock yourself out and watch it. It’s tolerable and has its moments, but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t mostly bored by it. Still, it clearly has some love and effort put into it and it's relatively harmless, it just didn’t go in the most interesting direction for a majority of the show. I think calling this show MEH is reasonable, I’ll check out the third season whenever it comes out, but if its anything like how season 2 ended, don't be shocked if I find a decline.
