Description Original artwork by the artist. Illustrated in Deleter #4 Black Drawing Ink with Crow Quill Pen on Strathmore 9x12 Smooth Windpower Bristol Board.

A third illustration I have done featuring the First Doctor as portrayed by William Hartnell for the original series and Dr. Who as portrayed by Peter Cushing for the two colour Dalek movies in the 1960's. This one features both the Doctors and their granddaughter Susan. The original concept came from Paul Magrs who had asked me if I had done any illustrations featuring the original TARDIS crew which sparked an idea of me not only doing an illustration with the Doctor and his original companions but have them running into their big screen doppelgangers.

I like the contrast between Hartnell's slightly tetchy and somewhat irascible First Doctor compared to Cushings more amiable and slightly absentminded Dr. Who. And it's the only time in Doctor Who history we see the Doctor ever portrayed with a mustache. All the television incarnations to date are clean shaven.

I like the idea of the TARDIS accidentally slipping through a crack in the universe and falling into a parallel world where the find themselves face to face with Dr. Who and Susan.

I also like the theory of some of the books and the audio plays of the Doctor's past and future incarnations still existing in the shadows of his mind. And I like to toy with the thought of Cushing's Dr. Who being one of the many potential future incarnations that might exist in the back of the Doctor's mind.

I just like the idea of William Hartnell, the REAL First Doctor, bursting in on those silly movies and ordering everyone to "stop this nonsense at once" or something.

Love it. I like little Susie's rather large head.

Coincidentally, I was listening to "Who's Who" by Roberta Tovey this evening.

Apart from when the Fourth Doctor was massively aged in "The Leisure Hive" and grew a great big beard and 'tache.

Was Cushing really that much taller than Hartnell? Or is that artist license ?

I think that was more of an accident than anything else But they have Cushing listed around 5'10"/5'11" and I think Hartnell was either 5'7" or 5'8".

I was also looking at an illustration by Lee Sullivan of the 10 Doctors plus some of the non-canon Doctors which had Cushing next to Hartnell and he had it kind of like that too.
