Description Ars gratia artis.

Oil on Wood.

Another portrait study.
This is this first time I've worked on wood. I think I prefer it to canvas. I like the natural grain and texture, the way it feels when paint is applied, and the smoothness of the surface emphasizes the brush strokes.

fabulous use of shadows. I love the shadow of the glasses on his cheek - very realistic!

Painting on wood is a different experience than canvas just because it's so much smoother...I find you have to be a bit more delicate with it. I suggest giving it a try if you ever get a chance.

Your art is the kind of art that i love. This is awesome. Is it from life?

Thank you. Unfortunately it's not from life (I don't have the space at the moment)--but I do set up and take my own source photos.

this is just fantastic. it seems like everything ive ever seen painted on wood, ive loved and this is no exception. the colors and shading are just amazing, the shadow of the glasses on his face.... i keep noticing more little details. the only critique i have is the same really as the above comments in that the clothing isnt as detailed as the rest of the painting. but it took me forever to notice, because his face is so captivating i wasnt even looking at the clothing. well done!

wow i really like the colors in this! the face is so full of forms and looks almost sculptural. very cool rendering- though i wish parts of the clothing had a similar amount of attention paid to it, it sort of looks washed in

very nice piece though, the yellow/oranges really pop his eyes

not-sleeping [2008-05-06 02:06:48 +0000 UTC]

Oh yummy Fantastic job on the face and the background, they contribute to the pensive mood and really make for a cohesive piece. The only suggestion I would make for improvement are taking the same eye for detail and volume and applying it the the clothing as well. Mostly the collar and knot, they seem very stiff and two dimensional and detract from the conviction of the work as a whole. But these are the kinds of things you notice when you're looking for stuff to notice Overall, it's beautiful.
Especially those glasses!

Oil is a very difficult medium to master, so congrats on that. Love this. The subject's a bit boring, but that's personal preference I guess. Nice work, however. Will briskly browse your gallery, might find some masterpieces

This is really good. You handled the specs very well . They do add another element too it . The light falling at his back is well painted and again the eyes are amazing they really draw you in. well done

This piece is so different because I changed my light source. Usually I use a single spotlight in a dark room so that I can create drastic shadows and contrast...for this one, I sat him in front of a window and had a well lit room. It's not as moody as my other work, but I feel like it's serene.

I've painted on wood with acrylics before (simpler, more decorative kind of things) but the oils were a completely different experience...acrylics stick a bit whereas the oils were so slick. It just felt really natural--if you ever get a chance, I suggest giving it a try

(Aww my comment got deleted the first time.)

I really enjoy this piece. It feels very warm and inviting, and a pleasure to the eyes! The colors work in great harmpny between the figure and the background. You mastered the depths and shading, with color (+++) and the shadows are beautifully placed. (I give you "+++" because I find working with color extremely difficult )

As for alterations, I really would not suggest altering it at atll. The proportions are perfect, as well as the shading and lighting and the color of the eyes are a perfect offset to catch attention. Very realistic also, although I don't think I even had to say that part.

(P.S. It looks to me like a certain someone my heart adores, down to the gorgious blue eyes )

It's Latin for "art for art's sake"

really? I'm being taught latin at school, and I'd translate it as: art because of the art. (it should be artis gratia ars, then, actually. xDD)

Yes, PLEASE!!!

Please forgive me, while I drool over your boyfriend...

I do believe this is your best portrait in this style, yet! I love the background--the way the colors fade away...the lighting on the side of his face is fantastic...the shadows of his spectacles (did I ever tell you I have a thing for men in little wire glasses? )...the cool blue of his eyes, in the middle of all the warmth in the image...the shading on his nose...the intensity of his gaze...

Oh my. I just can't come up with enough good things to say about this one! Well done, my friend--well DONE!!!

Thank you! Everything just fell together with this piece...there was no futzing around. Everything I initially put down in the underpainting was exactly proportional and in the right spot--usually I struggle with the feeling that something is "off" and it takes me a while to pinpoint/fix it. I guess I'm just getting used to how to paint Chris

Feel free to drool as much as you want..he is drool worthy, isn't he? TeeHee. It was funny, when he was dressed in the garb for the source photo, he kept saying he looked so stupid and I said, "Oh no...don't you understand that to women you look hot???"
And no, you never told me about your wire glasses thing. I actually made a pair (rather crappy looking, but they serve their purpose) just so I could add new elements to these types of paintings. I actually feel like it puts more Chris into the character...a subdued, well-mannered Chris, but Chris nonetheless.
