Description

This is my second Steven Universe Gem character, Epidote. She's going to be one of the two who will appear in my SU-related stuff, along with Dravite, whom you may have seen before.
This is the first part of the reference of her, her "Normal Form."

She's a unique Gem Fusion, who also has multiple forms. Please see the other reference sheets of her Berserk Form, and of the two Gems who fuse to form her.
Epidote (Berserk Form) - SU Gem - FC Reference
Jadeite and Terrabite - SU Gems - FC Reference

I personally like what I did with Epidote. I love FCs who take unique and creative twists (that still make sense) on the specifics of the series. I had to think of a logical way for her to work well, but I think I figured it out. I told a couple of my friends about her and they love the concept behind her too. I also did my best to make her not overpowered, and I wanted her to be tough, but not considered to be more of a priority threat to the Homeworld than the Crystal Gems are, as to keep her balanced.
I plan to use her in various RPs on the website, and if I have time, draw more stuff of her too.

EDIT: As of what happened in "Earthlings," I should mention that Epidote's Stability Devices are actually to keep the corruption from spreading to her Non-Monster half. This is how her Jadeite half doesn't become a Monster now too.

Name:   Epidote

Race:    Fusion Gem / Gem Geo-Weapon

Gender:    Genderless (referred to as a she)

Gemstone(s):    Epidote, Jadeite, Dragon's Blood Calcite.

Weapon:    Dragon Head Claw/Arm Cannon

Occupation:    Former Kindergarten Miner, Soldier, Geo-Weapon, Warrior

Backstory (Intro):    Epidote is a unique Gem Fusion between two "Miner" Gems. They are called Jadeite and Dragon's Blood Calcite, (or "DBC" for short). At first, both of them were a pair of "short" gems, like Ruby and Sapphire were, and they are BFFs.

Originally, Jadeite and Dragon's Blood Calcite were two gems who were best friends for quite a while. Originally, they were both created in a Gem Kindergarten on another planet, and then applied to become "miners."
They would help dig out areas on various other planets and search for places rich in regular gems and ore, which the data on their findings would then be sent back to the Gem Homeworld to determine ideal sites for new Kindergartens. The two were great friends, that is until something terrible happened.

Dragon's Blood Calcite, became corrupted into the Monster Gem, Terrabite. Terrabite then terrorized this one Kindergarten, and a big Kindergarten too. The Monster Gem, with its superior burrowing and vicious nature, kept wrecking the Injectors, killing new Gems before they could be "born" and was difficult to capture. Jadeite was heartbroken to see this happen to her friend.

She then caught the interest of a Gem Scientist (actually my one friend on DA's one Gem, Zoisite), who was working on an experiment to harness the power of Corrupted Monster Gems and make them more easily controllable. The experiment was to allow fusing of a Monster Gem without the other one being corrupted as well. Jadeite volunteered to be part of the experiment, since this would allow her to be with her corrupted friend, so that they wouldn't have to put DBC/Terrabite out of her misery.

Jadeite then successful captured Terrabite and then took part in the experiment. Using the new Stabilizing devices attached onto both of their gems, the two became the Fusion, Epidote. The device was successful in making sure that Jadeite did not become a Monster Gem herself too. Although the results were not completely what they wanted.

Epidote was then used as a soldier, while still maintaining her position as a miner for Kindergartens. However, soon they found out about a terrible Side-Effect of her state, her Berserk Form.

Personality:    Epidote's personally greatly changes for her two different forms, her Normal Form and her Berserk Form.

In her Normal Form, Epidote is a very apathetic Gem, who doesn't really care about much other than Dragon's Blood Calcite (now Terrabite) and herself, and little else. Her general nonchalant (and at times, arrogant) attitude and disorganization make her a bit difficult at times, and she does not want to act as a leader. The expression usually upon her face reflects her attitude, most of the time the look on her face borders between seriousness, or boredom, as you can see here. She rarely ever smiles, though she will sneer about some things occasionally. She definitely has a strong will though, still persisting to find a cure for her now-corrupted friend, even with no end in sight yet.

To Epidote, engaging in Combat is nothing other than a necessary evil to her, and she tends to make a habit out of overkill because of that. Though she's merciful enough to usually not smash one's Gem (killing them), she does tend to resort to a lot of brutal methods in battle, such as stranging her opponent, tearing their limbs off, torturing an enemy Gem before finishing them off, etc. Since Gems don't die as easily as other creatures do, she usually likes to make enemies who are Gems suffer as much as she can make them before Poofing them (as for Gems can still feel pain). Generally, her attitude in battle is one of condescending indifference. Epidote rarely says anything that isn't of an angry yell or a quick insult, or perhaps some sort of dispassionate vulgarity.
Though she can be brutal, often times she must struggle with keeping her cool. Trying to be a tough fighter, but struggling to not let her enemy piss her off to the point that it triggers her Berserk Form. A constant difficulty for her in battle.

This does not make her a bad Gem though, just rather tough and usually hard to get along with. She is more along the side of Lawful Neutral. She is very passionate about her friend now fused with her, as well as the other Gems that may be on her side, though not outwardly. The feelings towards her comrades are best displayed in the battles she fights, where she will beat down anything that threatens her friends' safety and throw herself in harm's way to protect them.

Epidote doesn't spend much time with others, but she has a way of showing up and will come if she has to. The reason being largely because she doesn't want to snap and go into her Berserk Form when innocent people are around, knowing how difficult it is for her to control, and how she could possibly harm innocent bystanders or friends in this form without much thought.

Epidote plans to stay this way, perma-fused with her monster friend with the devices attached, until she can find a way to cure her. Although no cure has been found, she still stays determined to find a way, and takes care to make sure her devices continue to work, knowing that if they cease working that she may become fully corrupted too.
She shows a greater sympathy towards Monster Gems as well, considering how she's kinda half-Monster already. In fact, she's less brutal towards Monster Gems than she is towards regular Gems. Also she finds terms like "Off-Color" to be rather derogatory and is offended by them, thinking of it as practically "racist" in a way.

She isn't really friends with Dravite (my other Gem), but greatly respects her for helping her in their escape, and as such hangs out with her and is an ally with her out of respect for that. Epidote can be a bit cold, but that doesn't mean she's disrespectful and ungrateful.

Abilities:    Epidote has a number of abilities, most stronger than typical Gems, due to the fact that she is a Gem Fusion. She does have abilities such as Agelessness, and Bubbling for Stasis.

The one big ability of her's is her Berserk Form, a monstrous transformation she goes into whenever her rage gets high enough. Read on Berserk Epidote here. -->   Epidote (Berserk Form) - SU Gem - FC Reference

Epidote's main attacks come from her malformed left arm, and her tail. As you can see, Epidote's left arm is like a large claw with a Dragon's Head (actually Terrabite's Head without the eyes in its sockets), for a hand. Her left arm can deliver a powerful slashing/bite attack, can punch with the hard crown of the head (which is quite strong for headbutting), or can bash enemies with the spikes down the side of it. Her Left Arm can also charge up and shoot a beam from the mouth, either a quick but weaker blast, or a charged up beam. Interestingly enough, she can still eat from the second arm too. The second arm's head does not have a mind of its own or anything.

Epidote also has a prehensile tail as part of her fusion. Her tail is useful as a 3rd limb, though she doesn't often use it to attack enemies with, mainly since she doesn't want to expose her second Gem weak point too much. A unique ability of her Tail is that if the Tail is jabbed into a solid surface (such as a floor or wall), preferably an area with fertile soil, the tail can grow roots, which travel through the ground quickly, and can be used for a couple uses.
The first use of her Tail Roots. She can absorb nutrients from the ground, invigorating herself. Think like getting an adrenaline boost. This requires the roots to be in fertile ground though.
Another one, useful in offense. The roots can grow large "Spike Sprouts," which resemble green tentacle-like appendages with a bladed end that come out of the ground from her roots. The Spike Sprouts can grow a good distance and she can create more than one, though she has to be rooted in order to use them. A distinct small rumbling can be felt in the ground when they are moving over to attack, sometimes alerting the foe. It does not require fertile soil to use, and can be used in surfaces such as stone walls or concrete too.
Last use of her Tail Roots. She can absorb nutrients from the soil and use it to power up her Arm Cannon (requires fertile soil). This allows her to charge up her Beam in less time, or fire an even stronger Charge Beam. When enhanced by her roots, her Beam is much larger and takes the shape of Terrabite's Dragon Head at the front.

In Normal Form, Epidote has better speed/agility and is at about average intelligence, and she also has a Projectile Attack for ranged combat in this form. However, this form of her's has less attack and defense.

Also, her Tail Roots have a big drawback. Although they allow her to use her strongest attacks, she has to wait a moment for the roots to situate, and afterwards she has to remain stationary in the ground for it to work and cannot move, leaving her vulnerable. If she dis-roots or is pulled from her spot, the Spike Sprouts all disappear instantly and it also breaks her charge for her cannon, cancelling the attack.

Epidote is also a terrible swimmer, and sinks like a stone whenever she tries to swim. She has a distinct fear of large bodies of water because of this. Although she can't drown or anything due to being a Gem, she still stays away from the ocean and other such bodies of water.

Epidote cannot shapeshift like normal Gems (unless her Berserk Form could be considered a Shapeshift). Her Stability/Corruption-Protecting Equipment prevents her from Shapeshifting.

Also, she cannot fuse more than what she is now.(or more specifically, doesn't want to). The reason being is that her Stability/Corruption-Protecting Equipment can only handle a 2-Fusion, but 3 or more would strain the device too much.

She also has to keep her stability equipment around her two gems in check. If they were to break, she might not be able to hold her fusion with her Corrupted Friend, and even worse, her normal Gem half, Jadeite, would become a Monster Gem too! She also tries her best not to Take too much damage and be forced to retreat into her gems, as for that would also break up the fusion, and she doesn't want her Corrupted Friend, DBC/Terrabite getting loose.

Backstory (Continued from Intro):    After multiple incidents of her going into Berserk form and making a disaster area of places where the Homeworld Gems were working on, the scientist, Zoisite, deemed Epidote as too dangerous, and ordered her to be Destabilized, and for her Corrupted friend, to be euthanized.

Epidote was not going to let that happen, and she fought back. She forcefully made her way out (well actually with help from my other Gem character, Dravite), and escaped to Earth via Warp Pad. She made sure to break the Warp Pad as she escaped though, so that she couldn't be followed.
Epidote was then branded an "Escaped Geo-Weapon To be Avoided and Reported to Gem Authorities if Spotted," making her a bit of an outcast on the Homeworld, giving her more reason to find a way to escape and find another planet to live on. Dravite assisted her on this, who also had reason to leave the Homeworld behind, and also had become a sort of outcast as well.

Also, during her escape, she found out about how the Gem Homeworld was now resorting to stationing Gem Kindergartens on actually-inhabited worlds, disregarding what it would do to those planets and the races living there. She felt this was going too far, since the other Kindergartens she helped dig out were all on uninhabited planets, and she never would do it on a world that actually had life on it. She now hates the Homeworld Gems greatly, both for how they treated her when she was thought of as a "Failed Experiment" and for what they were now doing with Gem Kindergartens without her prior knowledge.

Not only that, but she also found out that Zoisite had no plans of ever trying to cure her friend, if it were even possible. She merely just wanted them both as test subjects for their work.

Epidote now resides on Earth, staying well and keeping a low profile, but doing what she can to defend from threats such as other Corrupted Gems, and any Homeworld Gems, whom she wonders if they are still after her.

Nicknames:
Fusion Freak (some other Homeworld Gems)
Failed Experiment 26 (Zoisite)
Escaped Geo-Weapon (various Gem Authorities)
Dragon Woman (Steven)
Monster Mutant (Steven and Connie)
Suspected Snake-People Infiltrator (Ronaldo)
Ms Epidote (Jamie)
The Green One (Mayor Dewey)
Freak Clod (Peridot)

And that's it. Going to be using her in more of my stuff too.
If you want to use Epidote in any of your artworks, please ask me first. Though as you may have read, she's NOT a good Fusion Candidate, so please no Fusions with her.

Also, do not “ship” Epidote with any other official or non-official Steven Universe characters, without my permission first. I don’t want her being shown in relationships with characters whom I would not want Epidote with, you know.

Without a doubt, my favorite part about her is her Dragon Head Claw/Arm Cannon.

Thanks! It was partially inspired by Omega-Xis.

Awesome Gem. She reminds me a bit of Piccolo from DBZ. Both are Green otherworldly emo badasses who act all serious all the time, are hard to get along with but are a great ally if you do get on their good side, and have a tragic backstory. Plus, you said she had to fuse with her friend to save her, just like Piccolo did with Nail. And her charged shot reminds me a lot of Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon, especially with the spiral shape it takes.

Piccolo was part of the inspiration for her.

Wait, shouldn't her fusing with a corrupted gem cause her to become corrupted too?

Read the description. I edited her some to explain it. It's because of the experimental devices she wears on her Gemstones.

I hope this still makes sense with the series' logic and isn't going too far.

Wow, this is one of the few Steven Universe OCs I have found in a while with a unique design and unique traits!
I love how you pulled her together, an awesome fusion, awesome backstory, awesome everything!

Thank you! I always like my OCs to be unique, and take clever twists on a series' specifics, which makes them more awesome and memorable. Many of my other Fandom OCs are like that too.

Still working on more of the stuff with her, but she is quite the Badass Gem.

Have you seen my other Gem, Dravite?

I like Epidote's helmet, hair, left arm and colour scheme; she looks pretty good. One thing though, I think you should have her without a navel since Gems are made, not born.

Nice work on Epidote's compelling backstory; I like how Dravite assisted her due to them being outcasts.

Nice work on Epidote's abilities; I especially like the ones relating to her Dragon Head Claw/Arm Cannon. She sure isn't to be trifled with.

Epidote's hydrophobia due to her being a terrible swimmer and sinking like a rock is a nice touch that reminds me of Game of Thrones' Sandor "The Hound" Clegane's pyrophobia.

Epidote is a cool, creative and well balanced Gem character in terms of personality and abilities with a strong backstory; great going Hexidextrous!

Thank you. I thought she looks cool too. If you didn't notice, the round thing on her helmet is supposed to be a Mining Light, since she was previously a Kindergarten Miner. Also, her Hairstyle is inspired by characters like Tron Bonne in Megaman Legends, and Lumine from Megaman X8.
Also, Rose Quartz has a navel, so why not her? And I think Lapis Lazuli does too.

I thought her backstory concides well with the series, which is what I was aiming for. Epidote and Dravite arrive on Earth some time before "Warp Tour." I'm working on a part where she makes her new home on Earth inside of a crashed Gem Ship she finds on the outskirts of the city.

What do you think of Epidote's Spike Sprout ability, and the Tail Roots? Also, have you seen her Berserk Form yet?

Epidote's Hydrophobia I actually sorta based more on Sonic, and on Onewa from Bionicle. One of the things she'd disagree with on with Dravite (Dravite can still swim well, and her board can hover above water).
Her Berserk form shares this Hydrophobia. In fact, Berserk Epidote is even worse of a swimmer!

I'm glad you like her. Yes, she is quite balanced.

You're welcome. Nice. Oh. I see.
Lauren Zuke, a storyboard artist for Steven Universe, confirmed that Gems don't have navels:

Mm-hm. Oh, that would explain why the Homeworld Warp was broken; nice. Cool.

They're cool. I'm going to separately check out her Beserker Form.

Right. Uh-huh.
Okay then. Oh dear.

Cool. Yeah.

Sweet design Hexidextrous, I love the claws on her side. It make her a really dangerous Gem.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Hexidextrous In reply to Waimbert [2015-10-05 03:22:21 +0000 UTC]

Yes indeed, though she's a lot more dangerous in her Berserk Form (but also a lot slower and a lot less intelligent there). I thought it would be cool to have a Gem who is a Fusion between a Regular Gem and a Monster Gem. That's what makes her so unique and interesting.

My one friend thinks she looks like a Kaijin of some sort.
I thought the Spike Sprout Root attack of her's was really unique. I can't think of anything else with an ability like that.
Also, I should probably mention. Her Charged Beam was partially inspired by Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon (which has a similar spiral shape to it). Did you notice?
And her Roots Charged Beam my friend gave me the idea from Zatch Bell. It's partially inspired by Zatch's Special Attack/Limit Break Attack, "Bao Zakeruga" (where Zatch would charge up and fire a Lightning Burst shaped like a Dragon that appears to bite down on the foe right before it explodes). Her Roots Charged Beam is a lot like that too, in how it becomes larger and shaped like a Dragon.

Epidote is a real badass in her normal form already though, but she doesn't exactly play nice in battle. I bet if she were to meet up with The Crystal Gems (which I may draw in the future), she'd have a hard time getting along with them. Although I'd imagine Garnet would feel sorry about what happened to her Fusion partner (which is why she is like this now) and sees how she cares a lot about Dragon's Blood Calcite, but on the other hand, Garnet would most likely have a problem with the methods she uses in taking down her opponents.
