Since joining the class late.. I've finished assignment 1 and dove right into assignment 2. Moodboard is finished, and I plan to work on the portrait tonight even though I haven't left any time for critique on my first assignment. I really want to be right on track with everyone else on assignment 3.

Oi, I'm in the S-Realism class, but I've been incredibly busy during August (family member visiting, five-day trip without internet, etc. etc.) and haven't finished assignment 1 yet; is there any point in turning it in, or should I just go straight to lesson 2?

So, are we still doing the meme and just forgetting the self portrait?

You gotta do a portrait of something else, bro.

I was just told that a spot for this class opened up for me, so I took it. Should I aim to complete the first assignment before taking up the second one? Not sure since the first assignment is already past due. I assume I should try to do both..? let me know.

Ohman, I only recently found out that I could join this (I was on a wait list), and at some point I guess I misread that the first assignment was due on September 17th so aaaaaaaaugh /horrible student
Can I still do the first assignment and send it in even if it's late, and then work on this? /worried

Unfortunately, I thought Lesson 1 was due today and I haven't yet turned it in. Should I still submit it today, even though it's late?

All right, awesome. :3
I have another question. On photoshop, I'm not able to put any new layers on the Influence meme. I think it's because it's in PNG form. Do you have it as a JPEG or a PSD?
π: 0 β©: 1
heysawbones In reply to skelanimal342 [2010-08-19 16:08:25 +0000 UTC]
No. There is no reason a .png file format would prevent you from adding layers, either.
π: 0 β©: 1
skelanimal342 In reply to heysawbones [2010-08-19 18:10:03 +0000 UTC]
Well, it may not because it's in PNG format, but the option to add a new layer is grayed out.

heysawbones In reply to skelanimal342 [2010-08-19 19:06:14 +0000 UTC]
Are you working in Photoshop Elements? I don't know how to work in Elements.
Try this: Copy the image, instead of saving it. Paste it into a new file, which should automatically constrain itself to the size of the item on the clipboard.
Flatten the image.
Now you should be able to add layers (though frankly, I can't imagine why you couldn't in the first place. I have never had this problem with .png images.)

Would a photo of a musician or something be acceptable for part two? Or should I go find a website with stock photos or something?

heysawbones In reply to LuchaWhore [2010-08-18 00:54:17 +0000 UTC]
Not a self-portrait, just a portrait of any stock photo you like.
TAA has rules against self-portraits and I was not aware.

It's like an orange liquer spelt the snobby -quer way! Or maybe I am misspelling it. Grand marn-yay although plenty of people say marn-yair the same way lots of people say fondant as fonDUE.
Aaaaaand I just let them say it however.

I am going to ponder this myself (despite not being in the class :'|) since it's really not something I've sat down and given thought to before. I know... Some of my influences, from the perspective of "that is what I want to do when I grow up gain more knowledge/skill" but...
It's definitely something to think about.

That one question, I can't really figure out what exactly it means:
"Do my influences feel relevant to who I am right now?"
As in, artistically? Personally?

THIS IS A GOOD LESSON.
It's amaaaze how little people actually really think about their own work, and reflect upon it.
Often, we just get shit done, and move on to the next image. We never really stop to think, consider, and reflect honestly and objectively on the work we do.
I am not even in this 'class' and am super pleased with this lesson ahaha! Good stuuufff!

CRITICAL THINKIIIIIIINNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGggg
π: 0 β©: 1
Manamaraya In reply to heysawbones [2010-08-17 18:39:21 +0000 UTC]
YOU HAVE NO IDEA how many times I heard "you need to be more critical about your work" from my instructors during my first two years of school. I had no idea what that meant until third year where I finally asked, "WAT DO YOU MEEEAAAN?" Because for the longest time, I thought they were trying to tell me I needed to be "DEEP" and "CRITICAL" with my work...like, making social commentary n' shit. And I just can't do thaaat (because from me it seems to contrived and shallow)
They were like, "no--just know what your work is, what it's doing, and why you're making it the way you aaare."
"Oh. :T"

LOL I can totally see how you would misinterpret that, too, especially in Fine Art curriculum.

Manamaraya In reply to heysawbones [2010-08-17 18:46:20 +0000 UTC]
Yeeaaah, especially in first and second year, you're surrounded by so much BULLSHIT from uninformed peers, it's hard to tell whether or not the instructors are actually encouraging it. Luckily, they often weren't ahahaha!
Art school is pretty damn rad, man. Pretty damn rad.
