I wrote this prior to book 7- but my thoughts have not changed much:
"Though there are many severely flawed individuals in the Harry Potter series who deserve a good blow to the nose for just being plain evil, I find the most annoying character in the books is:
Dobby.
Yes, he’s not evil. Yes, he’s not bad. Yes, he’s probably one of the most innocent and well-meaning characters out there besides Hagrid and Colin Creevey. And yet… I can’t STAND him.
From the second he was introduced I considered him not only an idiotic nuisance, but a waste of space. I know that I really shouldn’t consider any of JKR’s creations a waste of space… On some level I’m amazed at her ability to create a character so grating on the nerves, as well as a character that brings up very similar emotions in me as it does Harry (though mine are much more extreme than his.) Harry is constantly annoyed and embarrassed by Dobby, yet can’t really entirely hate him because of all the elf’s done and how unwaveringly loyal Dobby is.
Luckily, I am free of that burden and can hate that silly elf as much as I please.
My main problem with him is how he creates such chaotic problems when trying to help Harry. He easily could have written an anonymous note telling Harry about the Chamber plot. Heck, a game a charades could have been somewhat helpful as he’s so animated.
But what does he do? He floats cakes, steals mail, and enchants a Bludger. Oh, well done, Dobby.
Though Lucius Malfoy and Voldemort are to blame for all that happened with the Chamber (and how Ginny Weasley was terribly victimized) I can’t help but put some blame on Dobby. He KNEW what would happen, and yet did nothing to protect Ginny, or anybody but Harry. And because he’s mentally impaired he didn’t even properly warn Harry; he just dallied about trying to keep him from attending Hogwarts.
Stealing those letters was a torture for Harry, and that floating pudding incident ended with Harry being locked away and starved. Then he went and cut off not only Harry, but Ron as well, from the Hogwart’s express, effectively cutting the twelve year olds off from any adult wizard. Considering how ‘Harry Potter was in danger’, leaving him without protection and, in effect, alone was an idiotic notion, and in the end many people barely escaped from horrible situations (Being attacked and almost killed by a deranged tree, and Mr. Weasley nearly being fired from a Ministry post being just a few examples.) Finally he goes and nearly gets Harry killed by a Bludger.
If Dobby didn’t have a blank sheet of paper where his brain should be, many people would have had a more pleasant year. One truly good thing came out of his presence being integral to the plot of book 2, though. Not in the books, unfortunately, but I got to see him boot-kicked by Lucius Malfoy, and that was freaking sweet. >

He left because he was hungry and jealous (at least, in the book he did), and he's constantly a jerk to both Harry and Hermione. He's alright at times, but most of the time, I really don't like him xD
