Xan does have wings, although they're not mechanical like this--I was just being artsy. All the members of his race have wings...and through some miraculous process, they're able to retract their wings into their bodies, and extend them at will. Xan, like all members of his race, is very slight and light-boned, which makes it easier for them to fly.

Of course, Xan wishes he'd never been born with wings...but I can't tell you why cuz that'd be a spoiler...!

(I promise you, though, that the story won't be over-loaded with angst. I HATE when people do that. Grrrr.)
