Description Jonathan “Jack” Riley

Human Male, Born 2246
Hair Color: Brown
Eye color: Light Brown
Place of Birth: San Diego, California. Planet Earth
Occupation: Starfleet officer - Academy class of 2265

Field of expertise: Warp Physics, Navigation, Starship Operations (Command division)
Major qualifications: Starship Helm, Starship Navigation, Starship Weapons
Starfleet rank: Lieutenant Senior Grade
Current Assignment: USS Lexington NCC-1709 - Helmsman

Adam and Denise Riley neither expected nor were prepared to raise a child like their son, Jonathan. Remarkably intelligent, but debilitating shy and withdrawn, Jonathan rarely spoke to anyone - even his parents or his sister, Kathleen. His remarkable aptitude scores drew the attention of recruitment officers from Starfleet. When offered a place at the Academy, his only reply was a shrug, and a deadpan “Okay.”
Jonathan Riley - like most Cadets at Starfleet academy was a gifted individual. Very early on he displayed an aptitude for piloting ships at both sub-light and Warp speed. The only thing that seriously marred his Academy report was his reclusiveness. Despite repeated attempts by upperclassman Willard Decker to bring him out of it (including a disastrous post-graduation trip to a local bar in San Francisco) Riley remained closed-mouthed and unfriendly. He was able to function as part of a training crew passably well, but it only underscored his skills that he did so without ever truly being part of the team. That problem continued to affect his efficiency ratings aboard his first assignment, the USS Apollo.
Six months later the Apollo’s captain, frustrated by the ensign’s lack of progress and poor efficiency ratings, sent him packing. Riley was reassigned to Border Outpost Five as a shuttle pilot. When Outpost Five was destroyed by a Romulan attack, Riley managed to hide seven officers - including the station XO - among the debris in his shuttle. Later picked up by the USS Enterprise after it defeated the Romulan intruder, Riley was given a second chance to prove himself aboard a starship; the USS Lexington.
During the next six months, as Riley was called on to stand his watch at the helm, he grew gradually less standoffish. Not sociable by anyone’s definition, but also not as reclusive as he used to be. It was Commodore Wesley who first started to refer to him as “Jack” after an away mission degenerated into a phaser-fight with Orion pirates. Lieutenant Riley was wounded while pulling the ship’s first officer - Commander Jessica Rodriguez - out of the line of fire when they were ambushed. Riley was also reunited with his Academy roommate, Lieutenant Willard Decker, when Decker was assigned to USS Lexington as an engineer. Surprisingly, “Jack” apologized to Decker for his behavior at the Academy, and the two reconciled.
Still reluctant to come out of his shell, but making an effort nonetheless, Lieutenant (JG) Riley took the helm of the Lexington during the combat tests of the M5 computer on the Enterprise. His first efforts against the computer-controlled starship more than made up for his poor efforts aboard the Apollo, but weren’t enough to beat Dr. Daystrom’s ultimate computer. He was relieved for the second drill, but was called up again when the Lexington’s regular helmsman was killed as the Enterprise opened fire with full phasers. After the disastrous war game came to an end, “Jack” Riley was promoted to Lieutenant (Senior Grade) and now serves as chief helmsman of the Starship Lexington, now under the command of Captain Jessica Rodriguez, with his friend, Lieutenant Commander Willard Decker, as the ship‘s Chief Engineer.

Personality: Shy, intellectual.

Hobbies: Model-making - has three "ship in a bottle" models: a 44-gun sailing frigate, the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier and the NX-09 Avenger, rock climbing - set the height record for free-climbing El Capitan.

Yes, largely thanks to meeting LT Briana Storm while he was serving on the Enterprise.

By 2284, when he's a Commander and the Lexington's XO, he's pretty much come out of his shell. But then, he's the XO. Everyone hates the XO.

Jack looks more than a little surprised at first. But his expression goes quickly neutral again. "... Thanks... but I'm staying in Starfleet."

hmsnike: That's Ensign Tamura - formerly a yeoman and now working in the Enterprise's security department. You may remember her from "A Taste of Armageddon." She holds the distinction of being the only woman in the Original Series who was given a weapon for a security job.

Yes, I just pulled that out of memory.
