Description
Not from any particular fiction universe, although I may have subconsciously derived a bit from Rakkety Tam. At first I was aiming for a mid-day look, but an afternoon or morning ambiance looked a lot more interesting, and kind of gave some color variation in the background, rather than just blue sky.Related content

Wonderful piece here Holt. The sunset is lovely with the colors pink and blue clouds. The uniform and armor mix fits well for a nimble squirrel, too. Rakkety Tam is one of my favorite Redwall books, and while I can see where the similarities come from, you gave it your own twist.

Hey, thank you Mulchior! I'm happy you enjoyed all those details and that you didn't ask why I used that particular tartan design or something like that, as someone else did - because I really was just aiming for a random plaid design and not even thinking of whether there are actual Scotsman clans with that pattern. xDĀ
Always happy to have your input man!

Thanks, I try to give positive feedback as much as I can, and point out what I like about a picture.
And someone was picky about the tartan pattern? Sure, tartan patterns have meaning behind them, but this is a fictional universe that is inspired by things in our world. If this was a picture depicting an actual clan in our world, then I'd understand being nitpicky about staying true to that clan's particular tartan. I doubt Rakkety Tam's cover artist went into that kind of research. Don't worry about it and keep doing what you're doing.

That's always a good approach - I thank you again for your contributions. Don't be afraid to point out flaws though!Ā
Nah they weren't picky, they were actually asking a good question - I just didn't have a good answer for it because sometimes I don't really put a lot of thought into symbolism in my drawings. I appreciate thoughtful or out-of-the-box questions - I just feel funny if I don't have an equally unique or sophisticated answer for them. Ā

Ah, I see. From the sound of it, I thought the person was annoyed that you didn't pick a specific tartan. To me, you went with a color palate that would make sense for a soldier that fights mainly in a woodland setting. Questions are good, as are critiques, which I try to give, but I make sure to always point out what I enjoy, too.

I really like the expression is he annoyed from his job? Or maybe he has a long night in front of him? I like the colours of the sky but I'm not so sure with the grass...I would like it a bit softer. I think the hard black border takes that away.

I would be pretty bored doing a job like that. I'm sure most people would though. I imagine guards typically switch shifts every few hours, but it's still boring. Hmmm, I see what you mean - now that I look close-up it seems very... thin? and I agree about the black border: maybe I can edit in a fuller, more natural-looking grass that doesn't look like bad spaghetti. xD
Thank you very much for the critique, Mintadt - it was a pleasant surprise to see that in my notifications.
