Description From the Break Room: This one took quite awhile. Ratchet & Clank's design is about 90% derived from references. The ships & space-port are more-or-less based off of what I remember them looking like in the games, so maybe 30% accurate there.

Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

As a fan of the Ratchet and Clank series, I absolutely love this piece.

The vision for this artwork gives the me impression of that these two buddies, are going on another adventure. Which adventure is kind of a big thing in the series. Also, this artwork I find, gives the feeling of suspense.

For the originality of this piece, I Absolutely Love the amount of detail put into this artwork. It's to the point where it almost looks realistic. So far, I haven't seen very much Ratchet and Clank fanart that goes to the more realistic route. Definitely a breath of fresh air.

Technique...

HOW IN THE WORLD DID YOU DO THAT!!!

One thing for sure is, you're definitely talented with pencils. Like, seriously. This pencil work is gorgeous. The amount detail of detail on Ratchet and Clank is freaking awesome. Ratchet actually looks like he has fur on him. (Which I find, fur... Is a real pain in the butt to draw.) And his Combuster. GORGEOUS! From what fanart of this series I've seen, I notice not a whole lot of people put a crap ton of detail on Ratchets weapons, (Unless the weapon is the main focus) but the amount of detail put into the Combuster... Beautiful.

The impact of this artwork, I find is the pencil work. If the pencil work you made can make someones jaw drop. I think that's a pretty big impact.

But, there is few things I do find questionable. The size and placement of Ratchets ears, the distance of Ratchets nose from his face and, his one hand. His hand looks squished. (And it's okay, the struggles of drawing hands is a real one. I can't draw hands XD)

Though these minor things I pointed out are really overshadowed by the pencil work of this piece. This is a beautiful piece of fanart you have made, and I'd love to see more like this in the future.

I'm glad it gives off a good sense of vision, as this was initially just a picture of the characters: it took some chatting with a friend at work to convince me to give it a background since I was dreading trying to work around Ratchet and Clank without smearing them too much. For the most part I was thankfully able to avoid that though! My friend suggested a pixelated background which I thought would be awesome to try on a pencil drawing. Started thinking of what would look good pixelated, and decided on a city-scape. That would require working from even more references though, and that can get boring, so why not space? Space didn't seem like it would be worth pixelating, so that's something for another day.

I've noticed that trend with Ratchet and Clank too - and a lot of other fandoms really. Not that I dislike simpler drawings, but I kind of try to fill in the niches that I don't see. Most of the art I see on a day-to-day basis is digitally-based or %100 traditional, so using pencils and combining it with light editing helps with staying sort of within a smaller genre.

I'm glad you like the penciling! Being able to show a variety of textures and shading I think was the most fun aspect of this one. It's only within the last several months that I started learning how to draw fur in a more realistic style, and it can definitely be a pain sometimes. (This one was actually pretty easy though.) There's a lot of good tutorials online that break it down. Same with some of the shine/glare effects on the eyes and glassy objects - that was mainly from tutorials. I didn't think there was too much to learn about putting a shine into an eye, and there really isn't too much learn there, but it does have a process - and then there's actually applying it.

I totally agree with your observations! I still make mistakes in perspective by misplacing ears in relation to eyes, and those in relation to nose, which would alter the way they look in a head-on view. I found that a good way to check against those mistakes is to flip or reverse your image on an art program (I use GIMP2). If it suddenly looks like crap, there's probably a mistake in perspective somewhere. Unfortunately I can't do that until the drawing is complete and scanned, so extra care is needed. xD

And yes, hands are the bane of my existence. I can't draw hands, and I hate drawing hands, and because of that I still can't draw hands, which just turns it into a vicious cycle, lol. Once in awhile I can nail it, but for the most part it's just torture that I'm willing to bear for the sake of finishing the drawing.

Thank you so much for the critique! I appreciate the time you put into it.

Oh wow! I guess I did pretty damn good for my first critique! ^>^
And no problem. I like critiquing other peoples work, but now I actually found the confidence to post one.

Excellently - and not just because you gave me a good review.

I'm glad you did: I found it insightful and encouraging. I definitely recommend continuing with critiques - you have a good sense of relaying analysis and perspective.
