I use a "quite look like a clay" eraser, it's specially for pencil sketching. Β

Shade first, then use a kneadable eraser to erase the highlight areas

No worries, I wasn't taught that technique, I just found it out.
One of the things you'll also want to know about kneadable erasers, is that the less wiping you do, the less damaged your canvas/paper will be. Do ad much pushing down and picking straight back up as you can before resorting to wiping - saves you a LOT of problems!
Another handy trick I've picked up over the last few years, is that you only use a small chunk at a time, that way you're not dirtying up the entire thing all in one afternoon. You can even load a ton of charcoal/graphite powder onto an end of it, and use it for a blending motion/blurring effect.
I REALLY fun project to do, is get a piece of white drawing paper, cover the entire thing heavily in charcoal (using a stick, not a pencil, as that will take FOREVER) until its black, and then use the kneadable eraser to remove the charcoal where the highlights of the person/image would be - essentially drawing the opposite of how you would work the paper when drawing with a pencil/stick. Its a really cool way to gain a rather deep understanding of how light works on forms and figures!

Not a problem; you've actually inspired me to post a journal about this ^_^
I will post new tips/hints/techniques now and then.
Currently, the journal is only words, but I'd typed it during a very slow point in time at work XD
After I get this current charcoal dry-painting done, I'll add in a few demo photos ^_^
