Kindergarten: Day One | Part One

The sound of two sets of paw pads filled the school hallway as two wuskies made their way up to the door of one of many classrooms. The smaller of the two, a waddling pup named Horatio, manifested his excitement for his first day of kindergarten through the repeated tippy tapping of his paws as he stood in place in front of the door.

The door was soon opened and the friendly visage of his teacher, a tall lion with a rich, brown mane of hair appeared.

Smiling first at the older canine, he opened the door wider and indicated for them to step inside.

“Come on in, I’m Mr. Softhart! I was just finishing up labeling the cubby holes.”

The two accepted his invitation, and stepped inside of the classroom. Horatio looked around with wide eyes, his senses stimulated with the comforting smell of crayons and play-doh. He could hardly hold himself back from scampering over to one of the many tables, brightly colored plastic chairs, and crayon boxes to dive straight into a coloring book.

The lion now turned his attention down to the little puppy before him. Placing his paws on his knees, he spoke in a rumbling, yet cheerful tone.

“And you must be Way-Way, is that right?”

Despite the welcoming expression across the lion’s muzzle as he beamed down at the little wusky, Horatio could not help but feel a little bashful. His shyness becoming apparent, the wusky took a step back and wrapped his left paw around his Mommy’s left knee for assurance. He did, however, speak up as he lifted his chin and smiled timidly back at his kindly teacher.

“Yeah! Oh! Oh! Momma filled this out for you!”

Hopping in place twice in quick succession, the wusky turned his attention up to his mom. He pointed excitedly with an extended paw at the backpack she was holding for him, indicating that he wanted something from inside.

Unzipping his backpack, she reached into the front pocket and pulled out the folder containing a piece of paper that she had filled out with her puppy the previous day. She handed it down to him, Horatio carefully accepted the sheet so as to not crumple it from his zeal and turned back around to face his kindergarten teacher.

His eyes shining as he grinned eagerly, Horatio held up the paper for the lion’s inspection. Mr. Softhart now adopted a mock expression of seriousness, as he graciously accepted the proffered document and held it up in front of his face for analysis.

“Mhmm… I see… Yes, very good… It looks like you’ve passed. Welcome to kindergarten, Way-Way.”

Horatio’s eyes lit up with excitement and unable to contain it, his tail wagged to and fro eliciting the sound of soft crinkles from the back of his diaper. Clasping his paws together in front of him, pressing them down into the bottom hem of his shirt, he inquired in a soft, inquisitive tone.

“Can I go draw with crayons now?”

Mr. Softhart looked up briefly to make eye contact with the taller wusky accompanying Horatio. Nodding once, the smile never wavering from his muzzle, he looked back down at the wusky and nodded again. Letting loose an excited giggle from his tiny throat, Horatio turned and scampered off in the direction of the crayons and coloring books strewn about in a helter-skelter fashion.

His gait slightly widened to accommodate for the padding between his legs, he took a well cushioned seat in one of the many plastic chairs. Reaching for the box of crayons, he set to work, appearing for all the world to see happy and totally carefree.
