Description This will be the last thing that you'll ever see, if ever you get this close to an old male Cape Buffalo. They are rated as one of the most dangerous of big game animals in all of Africa. They look a bit like the water buffalo of east asia, but those beasts are comepletely domesticated and docile. Cape buffalo are huge Behemoths that basically have two enemies, Man and lions and even the lions have a hard time. They are very intolerance of disturbance and would rather pound you into the dust than look at you. It measures 20"(50cm)x 16"(40cm)and is done completely in 6b grade pencil. Enjoy. I forgot to mention this is also a tribute to a Great wildlife artist named Daniel Smith. He did a simular image but he chose to paint it in Acrylics. The Ox Pecker (bird) is in a different position and his buffalo is a bit larger than the one I did. The layout's a bit different as well, but I loved the concept so much that I couldn't but help to want to create something simular.

A beautiful piece of artwork. That size must have eaten up quite a few pencils. Definitely worth it though. I've tried a buffalo like this but never finished it. Wonderful work. You may have inspired me to give it another shot.

Thanks Linda that's awesome. I hope you do get to draw one.

Actually as far as pencils go, I use woodless ones so that I can get the most out of them. They are solid graphite and I keep a handfull sharpened and as they wear down I use the blunt ones to shade the larger areas while switching to the more sharpened ones for the finer detail. I love them.

Havent started a buffalo yet...
And havent seen woodless pencils being put to use I think. I might have seen them in my art supply store. Definitely works great for you. Still love this piece.

Oh my, that's a terrifying image, now that I read the description. In Yellowstone National Park, I'm always nervous of being charged by a Bison. I can only imagine the rage of a Cape Buffalo!

Your pencil work is stunning! Especially in the fact that it's done entirely in a 6B!

Hi Brenda,

cape buffalo are way less tolerant than American Bison.

I've used the whole range of pencils but have found that I can acheive every grade I need by varying the pressure of my strokes with that one grade.

I remember thinking you had to use a range of pencils for two reasons - one was since I used a 2B and I never could get it dark enough (since a 2B is in the middle range) and the second was because my teachers tried drilling it into my head! Next time I try doing graphite work, I'll have to try my hand out at using one of the softer pencils such as a 6 or 8B for all the shades. Thanks for the suggestion!

8b is a bit too much like charcoal for my tastes ... too crumbly and powdery. The 6b for me was the best balance all around ... but in a pinch I'd chose a 5b rather than a 7b.

Experimenting would be the best way to find your personal preference though.

Good luck.

I've had my work stolen too, I consider it a compliment. Not the greatest, that would be to be offered money of course, but if someone likes my work enough to steal it, err borrow it, that's success.

haha

Well she's a good friend so I didn't mind and my ex sister in law tells me that she wouldn't mind ... borrowing a few of my pieces as well.

So yeah .. success huh ..... I do sell my stuff ocasionally ... I've told them that the ones on loan will still stay up for sale and that if they get sold that they can come borrow some more. Haha

Great work ... the bird doesn't quite find its place in the picture depth but the camouflage this causes makes it more interesting for mine ...

You caught the look in the eyes just right. I dont think Cape Buffalos are just big dumb cows... they've got too much of a glare in their eyes to be that way. THe ears, also, are perfect-- the shadows and the softness. I only wish there was a little more contrast in the whole thing, particularly with the bird (also a great, an accurate detail). Wonderful work!

Thanks Binti,

You're right about them not being dumb cows ... Point in example one of the worlds best wildlife artist's was just killed by one recently, Simon Combs .... may he rest in piece.

I checked out your gallery. Awsome African wildlife pics, and I love the big 'ol koi.

Hmmm buffalos. I've had to run from a charging herd before. pure adrenaline. and yes, you dont want to mess with them. They'll rip you to shreds and trample you into a pulp. But I've never seen one with an evil look in its eyes like that. They usually look really stupid and blank when they look at you. great work on the form and texture though.

Thanks,

I've seen plenty of photos of them looking none to impressed with being the center of attention, and have read some hair raising stories about them. Being chased across pastures by 2000lb Bulls is bad enough. I wouldn't want a cape buffalo doing it.
