Located in Xiahe county, Gannan Tibetan autonomous prefecture, Gansu province, Labrang temple (Labuleng temple, 拉卜楞寺) is the largest Tibetan buddhist temple in the north of Tibetan plateau. It is also the top Tibetan Buddhist college in China, surrounded by a large number of monks' residences and dormitories.Coordinates on Google Earth:

Xiahe is one of the places I most regret not making it to during my travels in 1992. I had intended to go but circumstances made me change my plans. Thank you for sharing these photographs of what I missed!

Yes, just the four south-west provinces mainly. I did venture as far north as Xi'an and Beijing on my first visit in '89, but that was as part of a three-week package tour and not making my own way round.

In March 1989? You're kinda lucky, the student protests began just a month later. Ignoring the the underdeveloped economies of the time, the 1980s were probably the most inclusive and open period of PRC.
