P E R S O N A L I T Y

Maypaw is a rather timid individual, often preferring to remain quiet and tending to avoid social situations, as he stresses easily over the opinions of others. This comes from the fact that Maypaw is a rather caring cat; he tries to be thoughtful and often succeeds in doing so due to being rather clever. Because he cares so much, he hates to think that others may think negatively of him, and if he does discover that someone dislikes him, he will go out of his way to earn forgiveness. Despite being terrified of others, Maypaw is passionate about his work as a caretaker because the caretakers of RushingClan were important in shaping who he is today and caring for him when he was abandoned. Unfortunately, because he was abandoned, he suffers from attachment issues- once he cares deeply about someone, he's absolutely terrified to leave their side. Maypaw's affections are easily won with the slightest bit of kindness directed toward him, and while he can sometimes be a nuisance, he is also a loyal friend.

H I S T O R Y

When Maypaw was only about a moon old, he was found on RushingClan territory by a hunting patrol, the clan cats having actually originally thought he was a piece of prey. Luckily, he wasn't harmed by the patrol, however it did appear that something else had attacked the tiny kit, as part of his ear was missing. Not seeing any parents nor any siblings around the young tom, the patrol took the strange kit back to camp and adopted him into their ranks.

At first, it seemed as though the tiny tabby would not be living in RushingClan for long. He was weak and tired from being away from his mother for so long and for having been attacked by some creature, but the medicine cats and the caretakers worked tirelessly to ensure that their newest family member was quickly on the road to recovery. As the small kit became healthier and healthier, the caretakers started to speak to him more, trying to get the young cat to open up to them about who he was, what had happened to him, whether or not he had any family... but all they earned was silence or a terrified look. The one-eared kitten's entire life had been turned upside-down and of course he was terrified for it, but the cats of RushingClan also began to fear that he simply couldn't speak or that his hearing had been damaged when his ear was torn.

Eventually, the tiny kit had been released from the medicine cat's den and allowed to meet his peers in the nursery. The tiny tom was quickly overwhelmed by being around strangers, and he instead tended to glue himself to the sides of the caretakers he recognized from his time in recovery. It was eventually deciphered that the kit wasn't deaf as the louder the noise around him, the more spooked he would be, but as the conclusion started to draw closer and closer to muteness it was starting to become more and more evident that he would need to be given a new name.

The kit's fear of loud noises became especially clear one night during a thunderstorm, the other kits in the nursery managing to fall asleep but the seemingly-mute kit still awake and shaking for hours. One caretaker took note of this and curled about the tom- and that was when she heard the first noise from him; a tiny but strong purr rumbling in his throat. Deciding that it sounded like the buzz of the wings of a mayfly, the caretaker named the fragile child Maykit. The caretaker had been speaking to him for a long while, telling Maykit RushingClan stories to take his mind off of the storm. But it wasn't until she gave him a name that Maykit finally proved everyone's theories wrong and spoke. He timidly told her that he liked the name, and the pride and joy in her eyes was like nothing he'd experienced before.

It was difficult at first, integrating himself into RushingClan life. At first, Maykit wanted only to speak to the one caretaker, but as he saw the same pride and joy light up in the faces of the other caretakers, Maykit began to take great strides forward. The encouragement of the caretakers of RushingClan was what drove Maykit to open up to his peers and to his clan, and while he still tended to be a fumbling mess when it came to speaking to others, he still had come a long way from when he'd first arrived in RushingClan. When it was finally Maykit's turn to become an apprentice, it was the love of the caretakers that caused the young tom to know that that was the path he wanted to follow- and so Maypaw became a caretaker apprentice.
