Description My Master's back in town so I've had the opportunity to spend some time in the shop. I know the tactical-folder look isn't for everyone but I feel like making something blocky. The Damascus is from Mike Norris and the liners are titanium.

So far, everything's just rough-cut. King pin's installed and the next step's to fit the latch for the lock.

I like how you show the lock mechanism. How difficult is it to make, in reality?

Thanks, they're touchy but they've gotten much easier over time.

Took a few years but now the Process Sequence has become clear.

The angles and edges have to be ground in a certain order so they work mechanically.

The first edge determines the necessary position of the next and so on.

Making a sloppy crappy lock is easy, keeping it tight with clean action is challenging and really fun.

Like a puzzle.

& thanks for watching, I hope you're well.

I'm actually thinking of getting into knifemaking soon. What tempering/heat-treating process do you use? Do you know anything about heat-treating stainless?

HundredHands In reply to AmpOwl [2014-02-20 14:15:47 +0000 UTC]

Nice. Β We're heat-treating in a small old kiln that was designed for Jewelry Makers. Β If you can get access to something that'll get up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, you could harden stainless. Β The Damascus we've been working with is stainless and it's hardening process goes basically like this:Β

- Put the parts in an air-tight metal envelope

-Get the Kiln up to 1950 degrees

-Put your parts in (kiln temp will drop a bit when you open the door to insert your parts)

-Get the Kiln temp back up to 1950 and let the parts soak in the heat for a few minutes (time varies depending on specific metal)

-Remove your parts and dunk them in oil or water.Β

Details of the process will vary depending on your materials but that's the simple breakdown.

All the best,

100

Ok, thanks. I presume you can't use a forge because it has to be air-tight, correct?

HundredHands In reply to AmpOwl [2014-02-21 02:53:39 +0000 UTC]

You can use a forge to heat-treat stainless, but I don't have one! Β I wish I did. Β If you have the good fortune of having access to a forge try consulting with a blacksmith to circle in on the details. Β The air-tight thing is just the method I picked up from my Teacher but there are other ways that can yield you solid results.

I hope you're well.

HundredHands In reply to TheDrowningEarth [2013-10-11 01:11:54 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, sorta, not really yet. Β I'm playing with the little hook you can drag across things to whip it open but we'll see, I want it to look a certain way too. Β We'll see how it works out in the end. Β The actual Emerson wave is great!

It is. The bottle opener on the old school Kershaw Talon and the DPx HEST/F also work the same way, a neat secondary feature.Β
