Description This is from the cover of "Wizard's First Rule" by Terry Goodkind. It is the first book in a very remarkable fantasy series called "The Sword of Truth".

Some mild spoilers below about the novel:

The characters dispalyed in the picture are as follows: Kahlan Amnell in the lower left (she is a powerful authority figure as well as a magic creature called a Confessor), Richard Rahl (formerly Cypher; a wizard, the Seeker of Truth, and lord of D'Hara), Scarlet (the dragon), and Zeddicus Z'ul Zorander in the lower right (Richard's grandfather and a powerful wizard of the First Order). To understand what any of these terms mean you will have to read the book (s).

Done with a layout pencil and shaded with a graphite pencil (also with the help of a kneadable eraser).

Have you read the entire series? I'm currently on Chainfire. Out of personal preferanceFirst referance I liked Wizard's First Rule the best.

I have read the entire series and the prequel novella "Debt of Bones". I'm not sure if I have a favorite book. I like snippets and pieces of various books. I did like the last book "Confessor", but since you haven't read it yet I won't say anything.

I feel really depressed for Richard and Kahlan right now because she's missing and he's being told that he's crazy.
That and I was sad during the end of Soul of the Fire and the beginning of the one right after it. (Can't remember the name.)

You will spend a lot of time being sad. Pretty much from the third book onwards, Richard and Kahlan are put through all nine circles of hell. I think the book you are talking about is Pillars of Creation.

Yeah... I guess I'll just have to read on and see how it ends. I just read the chapter in Chainfire when Ann and Nathan come to the Keep, and I just realized how much of a bitch Ann is without Kahlan's influence.

Yeah, Ann's character seesaws in my opinion. Sometimes, I really don't like her and other times she gives off that grandmotherly vibe and seems decent. What I wish Goodkind had done was to bring back Scarlet and/or the Mud People; they just disappeared.

I know... It's sad. After the second book Scarlet just disappears from the face of the planet, and after Soul of the Fire, the Mud People just pulled a disappearing act.
I'm on Phantom now. More that I think about it, I agree with you - I like snippets of the series the best, not just one book.

Be prepared; you will really hate Jagang in the last books and Richard gets even preachier.

Yeah, me too. Sometimes I got so mad at Richard for being so stupid. Like the time he thought Kahlan didn't love him and it took him almost the whole book to figure out that she made him put on the Rada'Han to save his life. (Stone of Tears)

He was very dense in that book. I actually thought that Emperor Jagang seemed almost too powerful. He always knew what was going to happen and he always had a contingency plan for even the most unexpected of things. Add that to his ridiculously huge never-ending army and it got on my nerves. He reminded me of some of the villains on DragonBall Z. It didn't seem like they could be beat.

That bothered me about him too. I like Darken Rahl better as a villain. I defiantly didn’t expect Jagang to meet his demise the way he did, especially after all of the grief he gave everybody. Did you read the last book, Phantom(I think it was called)? I just don't want to give away anything. ^_^

The last book was Confessor. I've read the entire series. I thought the ending fit well. I like how it wasn't too happy or too tragic (I was very worried that we would kill off one of the really main characters). I was sorry to see Ann go, though. I thought how Jagang died was perfect; the collar, the lack of control, and that Nicci got to do it. I actually shouted YES!!!! into the air.

MistressKym In reply to HWolfer [2008-11-30 19:45:32 +0000 UTC]

Ah ha, I knew I had it wrong. *shrug* It was one of those last three. ^_^. When the emperor bought the farm I said, β€œWell, it’s about time!” I found his death interestingly simple. Richard was pretty much like, β€œokay, whatever” and then Nicci dropped the ax, sort-of-speak. It wasn’t the big deal that Jagang hoped it would be, the whole I-want-to-be-a-martyr-when-I-die complex. I actually laughed when he died too because he didn’t get his way in the end. It bothered me for a time about the Boxes of Orden being involved again until the end when Richard suddenly figured out how everything fits. I could go on forever talking about this series. No one I know where I live has read the books, so I get a little excited when someone is willing to talk about it.

HWolfer In reply to MistressKym [2008-12-01 15:56:41 +0000 UTC]

It's a very complex series. There are parts of it I have trouble understanding, for instance when he goes into detail about magical spells and webs, but for the most part it's enjoyable. I thought that there was a good sense of the story competing a circle and coming back around to its beginning with the reintroduction of the Boxes. You tend to totally forget about them after the first book until Terry reveals that Jagang is searching for them.

As I said before, Jagang's death was eminently satisfying. I didn't like it that Ann died, though. I thought that she could have put up more of a fight.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MistressKym In reply to HWolfer [2008-12-03 03:00:51 +0000 UTC]

With the power Ann was supposed to have you think she would have put a better fight. It was unexpected though. I disliked how she and Nathan messed with everyone lives like they were playing chess. I know it all worked out for the best, but it still bothered me. I was also confused when it came to spell form explanation. I was thinking that I didn’t want to deal with the math. I found Jagang’s speeches repetitive. ^_^ I rolled my eyes a lot. For a while I missed Richard as an angry warrior because he made a lot of speeches too. But by the end of the series I was satisfied. Especially, when he killed the snake-faced general. That was a great page. No witty come back, just WHACK, bye-bye general guy. Terry had a lot of unforgettable moments.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HWolfer In reply to MistressKym [2008-12-03 03:57:15 +0000 UTC]

I forgot about Snake; Richard did sort of just kill him without any effort. I thought that it was somewhat sad that Richard's sister Jennsen went to the alternate world. Richard was always excited when he learned that he had a new sibling even though his track record with them was pretty bad (both brothers betrayed him). I think that he really wanted Jennsen to stay but I can understand why she didn't want to.

She didn't want the lack-of-magical-spark to be problem for Richard. I thought the change in perspective in Pillars of Creations interesting. I know that a few people didn't like that on Gaia, but I enjoyed the book. Especially the end. My favorite Mord-sith would have to be Cara, she's fun. I also liked how most everyone was loyal to Richard because of the man he was and not his name. That was proven when he was held captive by the Order.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HWolfer In reply to MistressKym [2008-12-09 02:46:47 +0000 UTC]

Yes. The Mord-Sith are cool; Cara especially. I did want him to bring Scarlet back into it and maybe the Mud People as well. The one character that I thought he developed really well was Sister Verna. I didn't really like her at first but she grew on me. Nicci too was a surprise.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MistressKym In reply to HWolfer [2008-12-23 22:56:35 +0000 UTC]

I was worried about Scarlet actually. When the three Chimes were out they were unraveling magic, which means that they could kills magical beings. I hope Scarlet or her little dragon didn't die. Terry didn't mention the Mud People much in the later books. They got a brief "scene" in there where Richard comes out from the Underworld in their spirit house, but that is the last I remember of them. It certainly makes you wonder. As for the girls. Well, I know Nicci is probably in love with Richard and Verna respects him. I liked how his influence helped changed their attitudes.

HWolfer In reply to MistressKym [2008-12-24 16:11:29 +0000 UTC]

I believe that Gregory (Scarlet's son) makes an appearance in one of the last books. He mentions that Scarlet is alive (I thought that she had laid another too, although I can't remember clearly).

Nicci definately loves Richard but lets him be with Kahlan. I do feel some pity for her but I think that getting to finally kill Jagang made up for a lot of it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MistressKym In reply to HWolfer [2008-12-24 18:18:46 +0000 UTC]

That sounds about right actually. I wonder if Terry Goodkind will start another series. If he does I might not have the time to read it because I have my own novels to write. ^_^

After a while Richard got really annoying, mostly when he was making vast speeches. I really liked it when he got angry and actually did something. But it was always a fine line between being angry for a reason and then just being needlessly angry.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HWolfer In reply to MistressKym [2008-12-25 02:40:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the long speeches could get wearing after awhile. The long explanations of magical usage were pretty boring after the first couple of instances.

Righteous rage is the key to the Sword of Truth but I guess that Terry wanted to show the philosophy and reasoning behind Richard's actions, hence the long speeches.

They did make more sense than Jagang's speeches though.

HWolfer In reply to MistressKym [2008-12-28 15:35:35 +0000 UTC]

That's for certain. There are several places in "Confessor" where Richard and Nicci point out that all of the things that Jagang says don't make any sense at all. Those were great parts as well.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MistressKym In reply to HWolfer [2008-12-29 23:41:51 +0000 UTC]

They didn't make sense and they angered me. What is worse is that Jagang felt he need to tell everyone this theory of his.

HWolfer In reply to MistressKym [2009-01-07 01:30:13 +0000 UTC]

I think that Goodkind was definately trying to introduce a bit of his own personal beliefs and ideas on religion and human society, hence the long lectures from his characters. I didn't mind reading the monologues because, for the most part, they were interesting.

MistressKym In reply to HWolfer [2009-01-09 17:57:51 +0000 UTC]

Yes they were interesting the first few times, but then they became a bit tedious. They did share perspectives of modern day issues thought. I wonder how many people fail to make that connection when they are reading the series.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HWolfer In reply to MistressKym [2009-01-17 03:03:24 +0000 UTC]

Many people tend to underestimate fantasy series believing that because the main subject matter is fantasy that none of the themes will be serious. It's amazing how many fantasy authors have social commentary in their works. I generally don't like when novels have these ulterior motives or currents running underneath the surface. I get enough politics reading and/or watching the news.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MistressKym In reply to HWolfer [2009-01-19 13:55:09 +0000 UTC]

I know exactly how you feel, but in fantasy there is at least the option of someone ending a tedious political debate with a sword. ^_^ Like when Richard killed all those council members and took over because he thought they had killed Kahlan.
