Description
Simple information first:Window markers, oil, acrylic, sharpie, india ink, oil pastels, house paint, spray paint on plexiglass.
48'' X 52''
The plexiglass panels were found and some donated from Walt (see painting) and one piece was bought from home depot for 30 bucks.
The piece is meant to be in a completely white walled setting, it sits 4 inches off of the wall with a hanging system I made myself.
I would appreciate if you commented / admired without reading my process as I would rather facilitate a personal connection rather than have my primary ideas obstruct any interpretation as the piece went far beyond where I began and ended in an investigation just as amazing. If you've done so already, then go ahead and read what I wrote in journals about my piece, comments about it, and my thoughts before during and after.
To get us started, the topic of the pieces were to be about filters, in any way, I began with the idea of how plexiglass filters paint to be flat and to me much more beautiful, also how my mind filters facts into things that aren't useful in a conventional way, but interconnecting many ideas in more concrete ways.
The piece scared me from the start, I wanted to express phenomenon that was new to me about certain disconnects in life. I finished a summer class called, Visions of the Universe (appropriate for my art piece, but not really for the class) what I found really interesting is how people first began to discover planets and even a formula that predicted that other planets MUST exist (planet X), and so calculus was invented and then boom, a planet's found! This passed me as just another fact I would have to remember, who did what and such, when I realized how intense the idea was. Math was invented, practically out of nothing, to find something in a whole vast amount of nothing, and even weirder some scientist made a crazy guesstimate that wasn't based off of any real data and it ended up being fairly close to the actual location of a newly discovered planet! But back to the art, my mind couldn't stop thinking about a lot of things concepts related to the circles of knowledge, my friend in criminology told me that it was called the dark face of crime, crimes that go unreported that must be formulated, a engineering student told me that the concept was called 'm', did I as an artist possible have circles of knowledge that only explained how objects had weight, color, texture etc... but I could possibly invent formulas (even guesstimate) to form a new way of thinking that would find my own missing '
secrets about the painting: much of it was done very quickly with my friend Ryan, somehow I felt that someone without an artistic background would be able to express themselves in a way I wouldn't, and that was a good thing for me to begin to build off of. The circles on the far left panel are painted as squares on the back, I made them baby colors to suggest that many systems are explained as being simple, and simplicity must be questioned deeply. Yay first piece of 5 done!

I really think this is awesome! I like the whirlpool effect, and how you kept some of the colors/shapes solid and some blurred. It really creates feeling.

thank you, when you get close enough so that the painting takes up your peripheral vision it gets kindof space-like too, I love the idea of mixing opacities of shapes and blurring the edges, that way I have control over how things can float.

Mind=blowingly beautiful. Some artists I know or have simply heard of..when they dab into this artistic style they reckon that splashing a couple cans of paint on a large canvas does the job, and this annoys me a little, but here you see an actual message being conveyed, really amazing.

thanks for such a wonderful compliment, somehow I'm always trying to marry the abstract with representational because I feel like there's not enough information given in abstract work, but there's not enough conceptual ideas in representational work that can give it mystery or an open-ended-ness. I like to splash and be inside my work like any other artist like this but I like ideas too much to have a piece not have some kind of direct meaning. Hope you visit my gallery again sometime!

oh for sure n_n I love your union as you said, of abstract and conceptual art. I feel so lucky to be living in this time were there isn't a single art movement like in the twentieth century, rather all art forms (and mixtures of art forms) can be appreciated.

huh... you know, I never thought about that, but it's true! Even if this is some kind of information age or something, the biggest art movement I know right now is that everyone is looking at contemporary artists, I've also heard that this is one of the best times ever to get into art, younger artists are in biennials than ever, people are investing in emerging artists, so people are supporting artistic efforts (but not really in schools so much), maybe besides being a rising commodity, artists will be seen again as crucial to society etc.

and not just certain types of artists, all artists who put effort and love into their stuff..uh oh, I'm getting into art nerd mode..but hey this is DA.
Schools...don't put alot of emphasis on fine arts, and they should!
My little town of Milton, well it's quite cool really, there is a rising interest in artists. I see more and more people paying graffiti artists to beautify there shop fronts, and I see freelance artists painting away and many people admiring their works. It's awesome

I thought It was just a fun investigation and I was done with it, but I started keep getting ideas for the paintings, it's definetely worth seeing how the process of painting works backwards.

Ya, I thought about it today and mentioned it to my art teacher. She thought it sounded cool too. I think it'd be a really awesome project to do for the dining room in the apartment I'm eventually getting with my best friend. I'm thinking 9 2'x2' panels or something. We'll see.
Any tips or tricks? Or just go for it? I prefer the latter i think.

the only trick is that the whole process of painting is backwards, which I love because then I get to make the background last, unless I scratch away until I reach the plexiglass again, then those are in the very front, it's very cool to have the ability to layer behind and in front at will.

Great thoughts. Its a very intense explination, and i admire that alot. I think u have conveyed ur thoughts very well, and can now c more into the paintings than before. I would love to give something like this a try, anything other than the normal canvas would be good to try, but i dont think i can buy this in Australia as cheaps as what home depo sells it, but im going out today to buy paint, so ill keep my eyes open.
