Thanks! These little animations take me a lot of time and effort to make. If you have the energy and patience to try one, I'll share with you the process I used for making this. I'm fairly new to animation myself, so this might not be the most informed approach, but it worked for me.
first I studied the running cycle from the show and noted key observations about the motion, such as:
Β Β Β - front legs move almost in unison (but are separated by 1-2 frames or so).
Β Β Β - similarly, back legs also move in near unison, and their motion is roughly opposite to that of the front legs (i.e. when the front legs are moving backwards, the back legs are usually moving forwards, and vice versa).
Β Β Β - a complete cycle takes about 1/3 second to complete (or 8 frames, assuming a frame rate of 24fps). I actually used 9 frames.
Β Β Β - there is always at least 1 hoof touching the ground.
Then I used Adobe Flash to animate a pony stick figure, tweaking each frame until the motion looked right. Here's the stick figure animation I made for this running cycle:

note: It's helpful to include a horizontal line as a reference for the ground.
After that, I drew each frame of the legs in Photoshop, and colored them in. I imported each frame into Adobe Flash.
Then, I drew individual components, like the head, the torso, the wing, and the cutie mark. I made them into symbols in Flash, and simply stretched, skewed, and repositioned these elements for each frame of the running cycle (rather than re-drawing them for each frame).
I then created animation cycles for the the mane and tail, drawing each frame.
Lastly, I drew the background in Photoshop and imported the individual layers into flash. The layers closer to the viewer move faster than the far layers, to create the appearance of depth.
Overall, it took me about 2 weeks to finish, working a few hours each day.
note: if you've never used animation software like Adobe Flash, be aware that they've got a steep learning curve.

Hello! I tried making a .gif version earlier, and it turns out to be kinda difficult. Every component is looping on its own timeline, so it's just about impossible to make a short gif without something skipping. It looks like someone posted a truncated gif on derpibooru, here .
