This image is produced by a photo-mosaic software I've been developing for a longer time now and it's finally coming to life.

All of the code is written in MATLAB and C programming languages.

The right image is a composite (mosaic) of 193 photos. An image processing algorithm searches a 300.000 image database to replace these optimal photo tiles.

The algorithm balances between reducing the total amount of used photos whilst keeping the "big picture" clear.

A recursive function is called upon ever smaller image tiles to find the optimal replacement image if a high frequency detail is present at the respected location.

Notice that if you squeeze your eyes the two images become the same b'c your brain only processes the low spatial frequency information of both images which is kept the same.
