Thanks for this I think there's a mistake though because it says "If the picture looks dull and lifeless, it might be the saturation is too high"

question, how about in color lighted environment where you pallete will be limited, for example: what if the subject is in midnight, i know the set of colors will be darken or purplish but how to choose the base color, shadow, hl color without using filters or layer effects? thanks!

Actually, layer effect is always what I use for the light and shadow effect you said.
It only takes me 2~4 multiply and overlay layer to get this underwater color, I can share the layer detail if you're interested


If it is not the approach you want, I can only say pick color from the existing photo (skin under moonlight, ect)
or drawings is the ways to know, because it's really hard to come up with a color out of one's brain (at least it's what to me.
