Thank you. Incidentally, Nikon Australia liked it too. I entered it in a competition and won first prize; a Nikon P500 camera, a great travel book and a travellers kit.
I've been offsite for a while, but whenever I've had time to get online I've sneaked a quick look at my friends works on DA. Good to see you're posting yours and getting more technically adventurous.

The photo was taken on the Li Jiang river in Southern China. It is reputed to be the most beautiful river in China. The backgrounds certainly are dramatic. When I begin hosting photo-tours next year, perhaps you can come and see and photograph for yourself.
Re your work: I am impressed by the maturity of your approach. You have been very adventurous and have obviously put a lot of effort into improving your art. I like that you have pursued such a diversity of subjects and varied your technique to suit the subjects and the conditions. That is the way to learn and polish your skills. Keep doing what you are doing now; be adventurous, be curious, be persistent.

Sorry about the late reply Ian, bit behind on most things these days

If I ever find myself in China one day I should wish to visit this beautiful river for sure! that's a possibility

Means a lot to hear you say that Ian, I certainly can notice an improvement when I compare my recent work to the older stuff (some of it at least!) but yes I feel it's important to explore all areas otherwise you are limiting yourself in essentially a limitless subject! (that being photography of course )

It's nice to have someone notice

Please forgive the delay in replying to your very kind comments. I have been travelling and rarely able to go online. I'm back in China now and may be able to settle for a while.
Such expressions from an artist like you I take as high praise indeed.
Your gallery is a source of inspiration for me.

Thank you.

As it is very early in the day, the fisherman could best be seen as a silhouette, so I exposed for the water behind him. I didn't have a low-strength graduated filter or I'd have used it to preserve more tone in the sky.

holomovement In reply to Iancaus2001 [2010-07-15 06:48:05 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the tips. I experimented with this kind of shots before, but somehow couldn't get the exposure right (tend to underexpose); the background loses textures. I guess the lighting condition (time of the day) is also crucial.

It is the Li Jiang river near Guilin in Southern China, about 400km West and 100km North from HK. I'm going home to Australia on Saturday, but I'll be back!

Come to Guilin, China, I'll take you there and you'll see that apart from getting up at 4:00am and trekking 6km with all your gear, including a solid tripod, it really isn't difficult to get shots like this. I've seen better! My wife, who I've been advising only since I gave her one of my Nikons 18 months ago, came back from this trip with some shots that put this one in the shade.
