Description After reading all 19 books of the Redwall series, I noticed one thing in particular, which was a distinct lack of technological progression. Does it not make sense that eventually technology would progress? And maybe to the point of gunpowder and firearms, which originated around the year 1247 for us, which is not too far removed from the Medieval setting of the Redwall books.
---------------------------------------------------

Anyway, felt like doing something along those lines. And it seems like there may be something missing from this, though I can't quite place what.

(I know Redwall is supposed to be peaceful, but you'd think that eventually they would grow a clue and form an organized defense force.)

No, The french continued, and still continue, to wear "Kepi's". The most notable example being the french foreign legion whose variation is often referred to as the "Kepi blanc" and I must say that it is one of my favourite military head dress.

The overall uniform looks to be about 1830's-1840's. The musket appears to have a socket bayonet which means it would have to be mid-to-late 18th century at least. And the savannah like environment perhaps denotes the conquest of the Bush Baby Tribes and the beginnings of anthropomorphic imperialism. The only thing that throws it off is the banner which appears to be from antiquity.

You sir, know how to analyze an image! I like that. ^^
I recall going for a generic early-nineteenth century sort of uniform. As for the bayonet and the banner, well, I was going along with the tradition of the Redwall novels, which is to have a sort of amalgamation of numerous different time periods in one. So the disparity betwixt all of these objects was fully intended.

Are you a reader of the books, perchance?

I fear not,

Growing up I was not parshall to many of the novels so popular amongst the youth. During the great conflict of Snicket and Rowling I was one of the few who supported the Snicket movement. Though I must say in his latter works he was somewhat dissapointing. And as for the socket bayonet, it is a basic design still in use to this day, therefore, while it originated in the mid-18th century, it was still in wide use in the 19th century. And I failed to point this out earlier but the hat actualy looks 1850's-1860's. It is not a kepi but I have seen that hat on pcitures of Royal Marines from the period. And it would continue to be popular in the French army (at least amongst the officers) all the way through the Great War. Even Charles de Gaulle fancied wearing one. Though I believe it faded after him.

That would be sweet, the long patrol would be like the British Rifle Brigade.

For true! And I can just imagine the Badger Lord wielding some sort of cannon as if it were a rifle

I wouldn't mind if there was a spin off series that was in the future of the Redwall universe, I think that would be neat!

I think the whole Redwall world is in some kind of dark age. Roving barbarian tribes, no large towns or governments other than warlords and "kings" that control one castle. You can see evidence of a past civilization like the road, the ruined church, the quarry, even the military structure of the long patrol suggests they were once part of some lager standing army.

That would certainly make sense, I hadn't really thought about that before. But history tells us, that even the darkest of Dark ages will eventually come to a close, perhaps Redwall is in store for a Renaissance some time in the future?

All for one and one for all!

Though yeah, I have to agree... even if they didn't develop gunpowder (which, incidentally, the Chinese have had for centuries, they might at least develop trebuchets...
Anyway, even if the Redwallers are peaceful, the Long Patrol are a fighting force... surely, they'd develop cannon defences on Salamandastron!

Yay! Someone else who agrees! ^^

Salamandastron would look pretty awesome loaded down with cannons. Specially if there were those enormous mortars on top! Hmmm.... I might just hafta write a fanfic along those lines now...

Well, the thing is, Brian wanted it to be Timeless. And, I think the whole point of the Redwall series revolves around that, if guns and other advancements like that came into place, a lot of the stuff that makes it so epic would kind of disappear. In my opinion anyway.

But as to the picture itself, great job.

I see what you mean ^^
But who's to say the epic would disappear? Have you read any civil war novels? I don't mean machine guns, aircraft, battleships and such. All I mean is a simple 13th century cannon or the like, just to keep things fresh and new.

Eh okay I guess. It's just that it would feel un-redwall to me. ^^
