Description My entry for =f--l--A--r--k 's Apophysis Challenge #11. A reminiscence of Saturday mornings in Woolworth's record department, clamouring teens determining the charts with their choices.

If CDs and oil on water had children, they would look like this.

This is like an ad for a fractal American Bandstand or Soul Train.

Wow ... brings back memories: 45s, LPs and even the old, heavy 78s. Albums. Dust jackets. Portable record players. Taping a coin on the record player arm to weight the needle.

And lest we forget: scratches!

Right, I need the 10-inch follow-up, "78 dreams": heavier, faster, cracklier

Makes me think of Desert Island Discs. Do you realise that the BBC ran that in the 50's along with The Archers?
Happy Teens.

Yes, I did know the program had a venerable history. Still going strong too!

What I remember best is the possibility the BBC gave to so many people to enjoy good music. I'm not a snob about any style and I think that what's called "serious" music is accessible to anyone.
There is a pianist who was "adopted" by Amnesty International while he was imprisoned in a South American state. He was well known here. Miguel Angel Estrella. He was guilty of taking music to the people, that is, of daring to be a little left wing. He said that poor people listened to Mozart and made the remark that it was like light, if I remember well. He was imprisoned for a few years. Eventually Yehudi Menuhin managed to send him a keyboard. There were no chords. It was silent. He would "play" his repertoire, so that his hands did not forget.
He was eventually released. I think the Amnesty actions had helped.

The programme I detested most was Mrs.Dale's Diary. Ugh!
