Mam pytanie. Czy tak "na co dzień" przy rysowaniu portretów, mierzysz sobie te proporcje i się do nich stosujesz?

I have learned to draw by using the first method you described and I believe that understanding those rules and proportions and adapting them to different faces and angles of view is very helpfull and effective. Of course I made mistakes sometimes and had to start over, but that's part of learning and training your eye and hand.
Maybe gridding and measuring with a ruller is cheating, but it still requires a lot of work. If you can do it completely freehand you have all my appreciation not only for the hard work, but for experience and talent.

Thanks for sharing your tutorial with us

Ilojleen In reply to mariaanghel [2012-04-02 18:26:57 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it does require a lot of work, you're right! For me it's a minor type of cheating, and not in a very negative sense, in contrary to drawing on a printed image... I saw many people doing it this is real cheating
Thank you for kind comment and sorry for the delay

venea1391 [2012-01-07 15:17:04 +0000 UTC]

I use a slightly different approach with gridding that I use with all my drawings (yes, I don't think I'll every be able to quit using a grid ).
Yes, I draw a grid on it in photoshop. I have a grid file that I save and just paste on top of pictures so I don't have to redraw the lines every time.
Now the important part - you don't have to draw the lines on your paper. I have one paper that I drew my grid on and then inked the lines so that they're darker. Paper clip that underneath the paper you're going to draw on and then you can see the lines through it and don't have to have them on your actual drawing.
Of course you need to be using paper that you can see through.
That's just what I do. ^_^

Nice tutorial!

Ilojleen In reply to venea1391 [2012-01-07 17:16:23 +0000 UTC]

To be precise, I don't use gridding nor any of these methods. I do my drawings freehand And about "the important part" - please don't feel offended, that's not my intention - but I believe that method you've decribed it's called a pure cheating. I think it's wrong
I'm happy that you like the tutorial, tho! Thanks

venea1391 In reply to Ilojleen [2012-01-07 17:41:26 +0000 UTC]

Ah. Well you can think it's wrong if you want. I'm definitely no master and don't pretend that I am, but I like to draw and I don't believe it's cheating. Tracing the major lines would be cheating, now, but that's not what I'm doing.

Ilojleen In reply to venea1391 [2012-01-07 17:53:28 +0000 UTC]

I'm not a master either, actually far away from it. No one said you're not allowed to do that, but many people, including me, believe it's cheating Ask, you will find out.

łeee ja jestem jakaś niedorobiona, wciąż nie widzę czy narysowałam coś dobrze czy nie nie mam kompletnie oka do proporcji

Ilojleen In reply to marciarzyna [2011-12-25 10:07:12 +0000 UTC]

Może to przyjdzie z czasem... Chociaz metoda kratkowania jest w 100% efektywna, z tego co widzę u innych rysowników.

Oh awesome! I'm so glad you actually made this tutorial! I was actually discussing these EXACT same tricks to someone in the office today that was showing me some of their sketches! I still have problems sometimes even KNOWING these rules. I am currently doing a portrait of Ian Somerhalder as Damon from Vampire Diaries. I started it at work today. So far I think it is coming out pretty good. I was thinking about the eye rule, and I think mine is a bit off, even though its not a head on angle. His right eye always looks a bit off to me.. haha. Anyways perhaps I will link you when I finish it!

Ilojleen In reply to ShottsyArts [2011-12-18 16:25:28 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much for the feedback, I'm glad you like my tutorial Remember that these rules don't fit to all portraits as humans faces differ. Good luck with drawing!
