So I thought I would share with you what I use to do all the time at my first college. First and foremost I was a texturizer. I would try to come up with new and easy to make textures for myself and my fellow classmates. Here is an easy to do Rock Texture.

1.) Just create a square (or choose a selected surface you would like to apply a rock texture to) and pick the two base colors for your rock. Myself I choose a dark gray and a light gray (pure black and white's should be avoided seeing it will make the rock too dark and light). Go into Filters, Render, and choose Clouds.

2.) You should have a nice fluffy cloud like texture...well that just won't do! Go back into the same menu and instead of choosing "Clouds" again I want you to choose Difference Clouds. This will create a negative of your clouds. Next use the command prompt "CTRL+F" a couple of times (this basically uses the same filter over and over again without you having to manually select "Difference Clouds") until your "clouds" are a bit more blocky and you have some viens now going through them.

3.) Now go into the same "Render" menu under the "Filters" option and choose Lighting Effects (look above to see my settings). Most important thing to select here is the Texture Channel (the other settings ARE important...but you won't get a rock texture if you don't use this one ) and set it to "blue." Next use the white channel and use the slider to how high you want your rock texture to be (also note that your "White is High" box is selected).

4.) AND YOU ARE DONE!!! Now of course you could play around more with the settings, or choose to airbrush here and there, but over all this is how to make a Simple Rock Texture!

Now gets to work peoples!

The best texture tutorial i ever seen. I'm really glad to speak to a videogame artist (i would like to become one, for the moment i'm only doing concept art for fan films, games and fiction), for me it's just like i was speaking to a superstar !

hrm, know of a way to do it in gimp? gimps cloud difference seems to work differently than PS i did difference clouds in gimp about 15 times and it doesnt come close to what you have

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dawn-Fyre In reply to Dawn-Fyre [2010-02-25 22:43:25 +0000 UTC]

after going through it a couple times it looks like i can get a similar looking texture if i do difference clouds about 30 times

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IMAGINeye In reply to Dawn-Fyre [2010-03-11 15:04:24 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it is all about the difference clouds and how "veiny" you get it looking.
