How to Survive the First Night
Xephos looked around himself, he was on a patch of beach, which strangely enough had snow on top of it, and over to his right, the water was cased in ice. Everything seemed a bit of a blur, but he shook it off and looked around more.
"Hurray! Minecraftia!" He said happily as the he watched the world expand out in front of him. "Notch has created a new world, and were going to show the others how to survive the first night!"
"It's beautiful!~" Honeydew added, causing the spaceman to turn to him. "It's terribly snowy." The dwarf added, his tone a little more miserable. "What on earth happened here?"
They walked towards each other. "This world, is beautiful." Xephos stated.
"It is."
"Made by a single man!"
"Yes."
"You're a bearded dwarf of Khaz Modan... I, I assume."
"I certainly am!"
"You're Xephos Blue, of the USS Enterprise."
"Yep!" Xephos answered before chuckling. "And we are gonnu..."
"Play multiplayer!" Honeydew said. "A multiplayer survivor... Survival in... so er..." Honeydew stated as the spaceman looked down at himself. "Were doing a bit of that..."
Xephos turned and looked out at the sea that they had woken up next to. It was strange seeing the sand covered in snow, especially when it was quite hot out. "Yes, I'm... I've put off playing Ridge's game, because... er... multiplayer survival has only just gone in. So... we're gonna play it together. Cuz that's the way to do it." He watched as Honeydew looked around. "It's beautiful isn't it?" He asked.
"I know... it's amazing..." The dwarf spun on the spot a few times. "It's an example of biomes, in the game. They have different weather effects an'... and different terrain depending on where you are. And this is obviously like the snowy zone, or A snowy zone... On the map."
"It's sort of quite Christmassy as well. I mean, we're coming up to Christmas, so... I figured it would be..."
"Yeah... it's like Christmas trees everywhere!" Honeydew answered as Xephos began to walk towards the ice.
"It's quite appropriate actually isn't it? It's bloody freezing outside." He looked down wearily at the ice that stood a few steps in front of him and nudged towards it.
"It is freezing!"
"Here in... the UK of Minecraftia..."
"It's unbelievable!"
Xephos slipped forward and skidded across the ice. "Ooo!" He called.
"You can see that there's ice..." Honeydew said nonchalantly. Xephos turned as he heard ice breaking behind him, his dwarven friend had broken a hole in it with his fist.
"Make sure you don't slip on it." Xephos said in a casual way. Not that slipping was the top priority, it was probably more important not to fall in and get stuck under.
"There's water! See look?" Honeydew broke two more blocks.
"Oh god, oh no, don't break it." Xephos said and walked a little closer.
"See- Oh god..." Honeydew said as he went to walk forward and slipped into the water. He jumped back out.
"Careful. It's cold." Xephos said as his dwarven friend walked a little past him.
"Yeah... don't do that at home kids. You could DIE. Um..." He looked around. "So yeah... the maps are generated completely randomly. So... you can often have like weird stuff." Honeydew skidded across the ice towards some mountains. "See look at this outcropping over there! Isn't that strange?"
Xephos walked over and continued listening to his friend.
"And massive trees... Um..." Honeydew looked up to the sky. "Actually... I think its nearly midday... In the game, and we haven't actually started. Um.."
"Oh... Is that bad?"
"We could be in an awful lot of trouble Xeph. If we don't..."
"I haven't really h-"
"It's very bad."
"I haven't really played very much of this game... I don't really understand... very much..."
"No... no..."
"Beyond the fact that you have to hit trees."
"No, we need to... need to, need to chop down some trees, we need to chop down some trees and make some wood."
All the while they were talking, the spaceman followed his friend over the ice and to the other side, where the dwarf began punching the first tree he saw. Xephos at this point just watched him, he didn't really understand a lot about Ridge's game. The pair had thought of different names for each other, Lewis for himself, and Simon for Honeydew. Ridge explained that this was because in another of the worlds, something bad had happened, and just in case that thing followed them through to the new world, Ridge told them to make up aliases for each other, in order to remain undetected. The spaceman didn't really understand, considering he didn't remember anything, but he knew that his new nickname of sorts was Lewis.
"Number one priority." Honeydew said, breaking him from his train of thought. "Right now..." The dwarf finished knocking down the wood, leaving a few saplings laying on the floor. "Um... the issue is that when night falls, bad things come out..." He walked forward from under the shade of the bush and looked around again. "Um... and-"
"Why is this tree not falling down?" Xephos interrupted, looking up at the floating leaves and trying to wrap the physics of the situation round his head.
"That can be quite horrible..." Honeydew continued before turning back to the spaceman and walking back over.
"How do we know when night falls?"
"Leaves sort of just... the leaves sort of just... stay up." Honeydew stated as Xephos punched at some of the floating leaves. "Well.. if you look up in the sky you can see the sun... and it's directly above us."
Xephos looked up.
"Right?" The dwarf asked.
"Right..."
"Which means it's midday."
"Okay."
"When Ridge started the server, it was... just after dawn."
Xephos continued punching trees.
"So..."
"Oh..." Xephos said as he walked towards Honeydew, he was now holding one of the saplings. He looked up into the darkness at the side of one of the high mountains and saw a little green thing bobbing up and down.
"So the sun sets, relatively soon, and we're-" Honeydew continued as he began walking more in land.
"Oh..." Xephos said again "Dude there's something up there in that cave...""
"Is there?" Honeydew looked to where Xephos was looking.
"Yeah, it's a green thing. Look, bouncing."
Honeydew took a while to see it, then backed away a bit.
"Oh Christ almighty! It's a creeper..."
"It's gone."
"Yeah, those are very, very bad-"
"It's gone Honeydew..."
"They follow you and they explode."
"I..." Xephos said and took a few steps forward out of curiosity.
"Look, don't go towards it!" Honeydew said.
"Oh..."
"It'll see you." The dwarf added as he turned and walked to another tree. He chuckled. "Oh my god."
Xephos followed Honeydew as he walked a little further away and spotted something white.
"Ok so..." Honeydew began.
"What's this over here?" The spaceman interrupted and wondered towards the thing he'd seen. "Ah! Its a sheep!"
"They are very, very bad things..."
"Aww..."
"Cuz, they blow up..."
Xephos watched the sheep as it wondered around and hopped up and down.
"Things.... not the sheep, the, the creepers, the green things that look a bit like cactuses... or... or something." Honeydew continued. Xephos being the curious spaceman that he was, wondered after the sheep as it walked away from where Honeydew was, and looked down at the sapling in his hand, before looking back up at the sheep, which at the moment was sitting under a tree. He walked over and slowly tried hitting it, until it finally took some damage.
"Oh..." Xephos said.
"They blow up, they will destroy things that you've built, they will kill you."
The spaceman watched as some of the sheep's wool popped off. He looked down at the wool, and then punched the tree's leaves a few times before following the sheep and hitting it more.
"Where have you gone?" Honeydew asked. He looked round. "Ah, there you are."
"I'm hitting a sheep Honeydew." He stated as he punched the sheep again.
"You get wool off of sheep."
"Oh, is that what that thing was that I saw on the floor?"
"Which is quite useful..."
"That little square..." Xephos walked back and looked under the tree, where the wool was no longer there. He forgot about it and turned back round, and got distracted by punching the floor.
"Yeah." Honeydew answered. "Except it isn't used for anything.. useful... at all..." The dwarf continued as the spaceman punched at the dirt, grabbing a few blocks of it. Honeydew chuckled. "Ok, we... were gonna be in trouble... er..."
"Oh, sorry, ok." Xephos answered and began punching a tree.
"What we need to do now..."
"Wood?" Xephos asked as he punched a log out of the tree, a sheep coming very close and getting punched at the same time.
"We've got a bit of wood, we... we need to um, open..."
"Yep."
"Open your inventory, and there's like a mini crafting thing. What you wanna do is you want to put... a block of wood, a block of wood in the crafting thing, and as you can see, it makes wood."
Xephos did as he was told and got the wooden planks.
"Those are like planks of wood that you use to craft things."
"Okay..."
"Alright? Aaaand, then you take those planks of wood, you fill up the crafting... thing... and... in all four of the spaces, and then you get a proper crafting table." Honeydew said, Xephos did as he was told and then walked back towards the sea with the crafting table he had just made. "And with that you can make... picks."
A cow mood from next to the spaceman and he turned to it. "A cow!" he said and walked towards it.
"Which is the next thing we wanna make..."
"Moo." Xephos began trying to hit the cow with the crafting table he had just made. "Oh god..."
"You're getting distracted very easily."
Xephos laughed "Sorry, so what am I supposed to do?"
"So..."
"You've made a crafting table. Ok, I think I..."
"Yeah."
Xephos opened his inventory again. "I think I know that much, it's one in each innit? Um..." He crafted another one.
"Yep."
"Okay."
"And then the next thing, is to make um... sticks."
"Now to make sticks, it's just one of the new blocks of wood on top of the other. Very simple."
Xephos did as he was told and crafted some sticks.
"And then you make a, a pick!" Honeydew continued. "A wooden pick. That's the next thing... there's an awful lot of crafting.."
"Ok, I've ran out of wood..."
"In this game..."
"Yeah."
Xephos walked over to another tree and began knocking it down.
"Oh god..." his dwarven friend said.
"Ok, ill get some more wood. No probs. Just punch this tree..."
"To make picks you need... you need the middle square to be a pick, the bottom centre square, er, you need the middle square to be a stick, the bottom centre square to be a stick..." Honeydew explained as Xephos walked back over and began crafting what the dwarf was saying. "And the three top squares er... blocks of wood. Or blocks of stone, when we... when we then get stone."
"Ok, that's a pick." Xephos said as he finished making his pick.
"Oh god, I... I'm telling you right now, I think we're fucked. Because..." Honeydew said, he coughed. "We're just gonna... run out of time."
"Alright, well, lets get on with it." Xephos said, suddenly sounding a lot less distracted by the random things around him. He walked around a bit, and it didn't take long for his curiosity to kick in again. He walked past the cow and saw the side of a cliff. "Why is this all black?"
"Also..." Honeydew walked out of the black area and looked back.
"Also..." Xephos repeated.
"I know, I'm not quite sure what's going on over there, everything's just completely black..."
Xephos shuddered and followed his friend back towards where they had put the crafting table.
"It's a bit scary Honeydew." Xephos said as he swung his pick at a flower, and picked it up.
"Um..."
"Ooo..."
"So, so we're... we're sort of in a rush, to, to find... um... some coal." The dwarf stated, as Xephos looked around.
"Some coal?" The spaceman asked.
"Uh..."
"Where have you gone friend?" Xephos asked, looking round a little panicked when he couldn't spot Honeydew. "I'm lost..."
"What's... oh god!" Honeydew said. "Um... I'm gonna try to find some coal..."
"There's lots of cows, and sheep here..." Xephos stated and walked down towards the crafting table. "I'm just gonna stay at the crafting table. I'm a bit scared..." He said as he began to chop down a few more logs from the tree."
"Uh... well the problem is you might have to travel, quite a bit to find some coal..." His dwarven friend said, he was now next to him again. "Depending on how the map is..."
"What's the best way to find coal, and why do we need it?"
"You need it to make torches."
"Ok..."
"Torches light up the dark."
"Alright... That sounds bad."
"Which is important because monsters come in the dark."
"That makes the dark sound bad." Xephos said and gave a slightly nervous chuckle. "Ok..."
"Right, ok, I think we're gonna be in trouble. So..." the dwarf said as Xephos continued knocking at the wood. "There are two options." Xephos turned and walked back towards his friend. "One is to bury yourself in a tomb in the ground, for... as long as it takes for the sun to come back up..."
"Right...?" Xephos began crafting some stuff but then decided not to.
"Which obviously is not ideal... and the second option is to.... create some sort of house Which will actually, it'll be completely dark. But it should offer some form of protection. Also its much better than just being encased in earth."
"Ok. Well lets create like a house, can we like, make like a... like one on the edge of a cliff or something, so like its got its back to the cliff? would that be a good idea? I mean we could-"
"That's a very good idea, Xeph."
"Just go in one of these..." The spaceman looked up to the cave where he had seen the creeper before. "Oh I suppose... that was a thing in there.. wasn't there...? It's probably not a good idea to go in there." He turned back to Honeydew.
"Yeah, um.." The dwarf coughed. "No."
"Oh..."
"Uh..."
"It's getting dark... Yeah, I saw that... Did you..." The spaceman turned to his friend, who was building up walls of wood. "Right are you gonna build a house? Ok."
"Oh god..."
"Um..." Xephos looked down at the red flower he held in his hand and just placed it near where his friend was building and then went back to the crafting table. "I'm a bit anxious now, Honeydew..." He said as he made his logs into planks.
"I think we're in trouble Xephos... Also, I don't have an awful lot of wood..." The dwarf answered as his friend walked back over. The house was... substantially smaller than the spaceman had anticipated.
"It's alright, I collected a bit..." Xephos stated and began filling in more of the walls as the sun was setting quickly.
"Oh god... Xephos..."
"Why are we building it under this tree, is that... a good idea?" The spaceman asked as he built up the house all the way round.
"Um... Yeah, I kinda thought we wouldn't have an awful lot of blocks..."
"This is gonna be VERY tight... for just us two..." Xephos stated as he looked at the four by four house they were supposed to be staying in.
"Have you got... oh fuck..."
"Um..."
They both gave a small laugh and Honeydew gave a nervous little cackle.
"Yeah..." the dwarf said "Um..." He sounded slightly amused. "Uh..."
"Or cosy. I guess it-"
"Quick, quick!"
"Depends on what your definition is um..."
"Quick..."
"So... the idea is, we're gonna go in here, and this is gonna be our roof."
Honeydew laughed.
"The floating bits of leaf?"
"Xephos" Honeydew laughed. "We're screwwwwwed!" He laughed more.
"What's wrong with it?"
They both laughed now.
"We're so screeeeeeeewwed!" The dwarf picked up the crafting table. "Oh, god I want to cry. Okay."
"You got the crafting table."
"I go thee crafting table, ok... Well hang on, ill put that in the house."
Xephos watched him. "Oh, yeah, that's really a good place for it!" He stated sarcastically.
"Oh god I.. Look, we're out... we don't have much room..."
"So this is our house... ok..." Xephos looked around and heard a cow and sheep. "Er... Moo... ok, now it's dark... Honeydew..."
The dwarf chuckled. "It's cosy."
"Can I get in?"
"Er..."
"Is there space for... w...what are you doing? I'm scared Honeydew... Already..." He wandered a few steps away. "There doesn't seem to be..."
"I had to make a... a door. Quickly."
"What about all these poor sheep and cows and things?"
"There we go, come in! Quick, come in!"
"Are they sort of..." Xephos began while walking back into the house. "Scared of the... Ooo, you've made a door!"
"Come in! Quick!" Honeydew chuckled. "Close the door! Close the god damn door!" He laughed more.
"There we are..." Xephos said as he closed the door.
"We haven't actually got a roof, but we do have a tree over us. or some leaves."
"Oh god..."
"Um... oh god... Uh..." They both laughed. "So this is it, this is the new world..." They laughed more.
"This is Minecraftia..."
"Surviving the first night!" Honeydew laughed "It's just us, in the dark!"
"We've really made a good... A really good guide for people!"
Honeydew laughed.
And so began their first ever night.
