I can't help to think that it would have been much easier to just paint the whole thing from scratch using the photograps as reference only. With a little photo texture thrown in at the end.

Of course not.
That is why I was surpriced by the picture and the tutorial. There is so little left of the original textures of the photographs that I would call it a digital painting rather than a photomanipulation. Someone who is not skilled at painting will have a difficult time replicating it succesfully.
No matter, it is the end result that is important, not the teqnique you used. The picture is really nice and the tutorial was interesting.

also exist such methods in photo manipulation, as
Liquify and other manual tools, that allow to change photo from stockresources cardinally, not only with paint over.

maybe you right, but i think photomanipulators should try, like me sometime start with simply paint over photo.

Not as good as yours, and I did a little varity on mine but omg this is the first tutorial that I've been able to actually understand how to do the lighting effects - had been wanting to learn for the past 6 months lol. I don't have a Wacom tablet so I know it can be even better, so I ordered one last night lol - thanks so much!
