This is actually a Chevy 210, the Bel Air would have had a double chrome strip on the front fender, usually with the inside painted white. The 210 had a single, solid strip. Beautiful car though, great capture!

Haha, I do the best I can with identification. Since it was the police I figured they went to the full-on bel-air since the fuzz always gets the top end stuff. Thanks for the info!

The Bel-Air was a more luxurious version of the 210, but the most bad-assed of this series of cars was the '57 Black Widow, a special order Chevy 150 with a fuel-injected 283 that eventually got itself banned by NASCAR.

How does one exactly get banned by NASCAR?

By being too successful. Here's an article on a Black Widow that sold at Barret-Jackson: www.autoblog.com/2010/09/23/19…

Fascinating! I'd never heard of the Black Widow before. Thanks for the info!

A friend of mine's father used to race a '57 a long time ago, so I have a bit of an obsession with 55-57s

Oh, I love 57's. (I like big fins and I cannot lie.) So I'm a little ashamed of myself for not knowing about the black widows.

My dad used to work on and modify cars in his garage with his brother when they were growing up in Minnesota in the 50's and 60's, and he has this great story about how he and his brother got a hold of a big hemi, and they were eager to put it in something, but at the time they didn't have any whole cars on hand, but their neighbor was selling a disgusting pink colored Chrysler, so they decided what the hell. Dad's cousin eventually bought it off him and took it street racing, and just loved the thing to tears because heΒ reveled inΒ the whole insult to injury factory of beating people with a pink Chrysler with floral print upholstery.

What a great story, thank you for sharing! Got any scanned pics of the pink Chrysler?

I don't think dad has any pictures anymore unfortunately, if he ever took any to begin with. He was an older teenager and that was over 40 years ago.

Hmm... Adam-12 was the 70's, so would this be a Dragnet-era LAPD mobile?

I'm no good with old TV shows, so I have no idea. I can tell you this police car is a 1956 Chevy.

1956 would be about the right time period... Cool!

You mean you have never seen a Chevy Belair before? Or do you mean you have just never seen a Belair POLICE car before?

AH. That makes more sense. They were popular as police cars back in the 50's.
