===EDIT 09/08/10WE HAVE PETITIONS!!!
===END EDIT
Well, this is part of my answer to the question of the week over at Anime News Network . The question is:
"What old series/movie are you interested in that the new crop of fans is completely uninterested in? Why do you think that is? What steps would you take to reverse it."
UPDATE!! My post and comic was posted! Just scroll to the bottom of this article . Glad to see several 009 fans commenting in the forum ^^
Well, I don't think I need to tell you what series I enjoy XD
Seriously, this show had a prime place to gain a following, the Toonami block on weekdays in the 2000's was THE PLACE for animation. But, it didn't garner enough favor to appease the rating gods and it was banished to like 4:30am. What is more disheartening is the series never ran its course in broadcast, missing the last 4 episodes, and we cannot even view it through other means like a streaming site or DVDs.
It just makes me sad.

I love Cyborg 009 and Kikaider, and while I can find fans every now and then, most of my generation has forgotten those great series because of poor time slots or because they were compared against something newer, flashier, and ultimately dumber. Not to mention, both of those series were left unfinished in the US (last four episodes of 009 and last OVA of Kikaider).
I'm not really sure how I'd revive interest in it, but I suppose it'd have to be on a block with series of similar 'feel'. For example, if I were to make an anime schedule for Adult swim, it'd consist of:
Saber Marionette J/Cyborg 009/Chobits/Kikaider/Outlaw Star/Cowboy Bebop (if I want to do a funny/serious pairs)
or
Cyborg 009/Kikaider/Big O/Witch Hunter Robin/Cowboy Bebop/Wolf's Rain (if I want a more melancholy lineup)
I keep hoping that there will be revived interest in the Ishinomori stuff someday, so that we might at least get the rest of the manga for Cyborg 009 translated. I would love to have the original Kikaider manga translated, and same for Inazuman. Hell, I'd love for Inazuman to get it's own 13 ep. OVA series, but that's a whole different can of worms there...

Yes, that's right on the money. It's a little sad what's happened to that show, which should be loved by so many.
oh yes, getting on broadcast would be wonderful. Love your lineups, I'd pick the first one! *though I want to watch Big O again*
Well, I think the company that manages and licenses his properties will continue bringing out series. They came out with the animated Skull Man in 2007. I picked up the American DVD. So I'll do what I can and let people know about it and support it with my wallet!
There is Kikaider manga?! I did not know this! I want to see... T3T I still need to pick up the Kikaider Animation... so much ishinomori to enjoy...

Inuyatta In reply to inertbiscuit [2010-06-18 23:53:20 +0000 UTC]
To be fair, the series does have a lot of fans--just from older generations. Meaning, not necessarily the same thing we grew up on. Esp. for Kikaider, which has older fans for the live action show...that was pretty much a whole different story from the manga and anime. XD
The other problem with the titles getting licensed is that they don't seem to market it too much. Not that they market a whole lot of anime in the US, which is a shame. It's also partly why I roll my eyes at the companies putting all the blame on fansubs and scanlator groups--they may not be helping them to earn money, but it's not like they're doing a whole lot to help themselves either. At least FUNimation is headed in the right direction, with the online streaming. Viz may not be too far behind.
Yep, there is Kikaider manga (1972-74). Four volumes, never translated. I swear, if I can land another copy for decent money, I will scan it in hopes of a scanlation group picking it up. If you're looking to get the anime series, check if you have an Entertainmart nearby. And if all else fails, Rightstuf or Amazon should be able to accommodate for a good price.

I agree. Anime needs better ways to reach out to the fans to keep them informed of series. When I was into a anime heavy phase, it was simple. But now that I've pulled back in my fandom, if they increased their marketing efforts and offerings, I'd be interested.
We need tape trading groups or to the the fan subber sites with series that are not being served to our markets. I still have my fansub tapes of the 5th season of Sailor Moon. I'd rather have an official release, but until then, they remain in my collection.
I love the efforts Funimation is making. I'll probably start subscribing to a couple sites soon. Maybe ANN and Funimation. Not sure, need to see where's the series I want to see are.
Just checked out Amazon, looks promising. I love the design of this show and its animated much better than 009, thanks

Inuyatta In reply to inertbiscuit [2010-06-20 08:08:20 +0000 UTC]
Exactly--the market for anime has become so saturated, they're gonna have to work a little harder to convince me that a series is gonna be worth my time if it's over 26 episodes. I need some variety, some incentive to collect the series--and since anime is pretty much made for merchandising in Japan, including some of that for pre-orders would be smart.
Funimation has been very keen on keeping up with the times, which is why they remain one of the big 3 distributors.
Hey, more than happy to introduce new fans to a series I truly love. If you wanna watch some episodes while waiting for your box set to be delivered, I know the dub is on youtube, and I was very impressed with it. Though I might be biased from knowing some of the cast, but...no, bias aside, it's really well done. :3

Oh I know what you mean, not only is it an investment, but it takes time to watch that much anime. We have yet to strike a good balance between our collector/hardcore fan and more casual fans. Nobody seems to have enough money to keep the industry afloat.
*nods* Funi seems better to adapt. They've also been more choosy on the properties they choose to work with, making sure there's a stronger fandom attached for better success.
X3 oh no need for bias, we'll enjoy the show whatever way we can

Inuyatta In reply to inertbiscuit [2010-06-24 05:35:41 +0000 UTC]
It certainly doesn't help that the market caters heavily to shounen jump titles and little else. =\
FUNi is definitely the one company I am certain will be able to adapt to any adversity within the industry, because they work hard to find solutions that are mutually beneficial to them and their consumer base.
Indeed--ohoho, I must thank you, this conversation has inspired me to do a re-watch. :3

"Anyway, who would want to watch us?" *Jet, Joe, and Albert stare out... most likely at the Cyborg 009 fangirls watching them*
XD That made me laugh. As for the anime... I never knew it was on at 4:30 am... I only remember seeing one or two episodes when I was 7 and then I named a lego dude "009" and I treated Joe as a hero...
I say we band together and use our super powers to go back in time and get this problem fixed! BY FORCE IF WE HAVE TO!!! D8<
Jet is acting in a similar way that I did when I couldn't find the manga scans online... and then found out it went out of print... and THEN found out the writer was dead and the story was unfinished... and THEN finding out that I couldn't watch the original 1968 series in its entirety. Good job!

Yes I have... that path included a 3 hour rant about how the whole thing was blasphemy... especially since I found it all out at ONCE. Thankfully, it did eventually bring all of us fangirls together which makes me happy that I did walk such a path!

yeah, it's funny to think a show that came out during the anime boom wasn't supported by any media. O_o We have to scavenge for torrents or buy a bootleg
But we'll get through it together! Out of curiousity, what were you watching to get through the series? A fan streaming site somewhere? Torrents?

SyaotheMage In reply to inertbiscuit [2010-06-19 04:13:13 +0000 UTC]
It's also a let down. 2001 anime came out and it's on Toonami with DragonBall Z and Sailor Moon and some form of Gundam and what does the world say to the poor cyborgs? "HELL. NO."
That just encourages many to break the law.
Yes we shall! And yeah... I had watched the first episode on Youtube and then I tried watching the 1968 series on there. While searching for the rest of the series... I ended up finding most of the 2001 series in English on a site called "AnimePalm" and all the episodes it didn't have I found with English subtitles on a site called "Kumby". They were most likely fan streaming sites since I don't normally download things onto my computer unless it's music.

Yeah, I hate it when people buy bootlegs. Though, they don't realize they are bootlegs. I don't want people watching stuff for free when a company has released and put resources into a piece. But until some company puts some cash into Cyborg 009, I'll go about this way. When someone gets cyborgs going again, I WILL SPEND MY MONEY on their product. It's my old code from tape-trading days XD

SyaotheMage In reply to inertbiscuit [2010-06-19 04:39:05 +0000 UTC]
It's very sad. ;_;
You're welcome. The subtitles on Kumby are horrible though... It said Joe's name was "Jose" for half an episode once... and "SuKANTOly" is not a real word. Neither is "AcciKANTOly". And you're talking about that youtube channel? I went onto youtube and a large portion of the English episodes are up, but not on the same channel. Another kind soul has taken to uploading episodes 1 through 34 auf Englisch.
Bootlegs aren't very nice. My mom bought a bootleg of "Fight Club" once... And YES. We the fans demand JUSTICE! I normally watch things for free... then if I like, I buy. Sometimes I like, but I can't buy. D8<
I went into FYE once and I looked at the card labeled "Cyborg 009" to at least find a DVD of something... and it was empty. I seriously got onto my knees, shook my fists towards the Heavens and went "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" dramatically. My parents decided that I wasn't related to them for that brief moment and slowly walked away. XD I never really had any "tape-trading days". I had "I-don't-got-it-so-let's-make-some-lemonade-to-get-it-but-it'll-never-happen-until-December days". XD
I'm thirsty.

inertbiscuit In reply to SyaotheMage [2010-06-19 04:49:13 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, those are the subtitles from the bootleg DVDs. The only other copies of digital files are someone digitized some VHS tapes, rips from the Australian release of the DVD, and rips from the bootlegs. No legal US release in sight. D:
I bought several bootlegs when I was new to anime fandom. I didn't realize I was doing that D: They are music CD bootlegs. I tried to replace what I could with legal releases, but, they were out of print XD
;;;3;;; oh the pain of being a fan of an obscure series~ I'm with you!!!

SyaotheMage In reply to inertbiscuit [2010-06-19 05:00:27 +0000 UTC]
Gosh darn it! D8< This world is crawling with illegal anime viewing pleasure and BLASPHEMY!
As for bootlegs... never purchased them. Anime fandoms went back to when I was 7 and my parents figured that i was fine with just watching Toonami everyday until 6 or 7 and then naming my toys after all of the characters so that we could have tea parties AND save the world. I really started buying things to support my fandoms when I began teaching myself how to draw. Everything I have is legal... mostly manga and no bootlegs at all. If it's out of print... then it just sucks for me... o_o All my CDs were legal too... but I listen to metal and stuff and my favorite band is kinda hard to find.
Oh my! ;;3;; The pain! I tend to become a fan of things many people don't hear about nowadays. Cyborg 009 and Clover are both incomplete, out-of-print at one time... and almost unheard of to any newbs who don't dig far enough into their childhood. And huzzah for people being with me! XD

This is incredible. And I'll tell you why. I came late to the "Cyborg 009" party. When I was a wee sprawg, maybe 6 years old, I read a book about animation. One of the examples of "anime" they gave WAS "Cyborg 009". I remember there was a picture from the 1960's anime of Joe fighting a big snake robot. Not long after, I discoverd "Astro Boy" on Canadian TV and was officially hooked.
About 20-or-so years go by! I am now a full-fledged anime fan and like to think of myself as a purveyor of the "old school" material. I know who Shotaro Ishinomori is, but I never really paid much attention to his work. Then about 4 months ago, I'm on YouTube and I come across a "Cyborg 009" AMV. I am INTRIGUED. This looks familiar, somehow. So I jump in, looking for any and all information I can find on this series that sparked a memory. Now here I am, a complete and total fan.
Now back to the comic and why I think it is incredible. Apart from Miss Biscuit being an amazing artist, that is!
"I want to watch Cyborg 009 and all I can find are bad subs and fuzzy TV rips!" YES!! Sweet Zombie Jesus, yes! It astounds me that, in this age of the internet and the rabidness of many anime fans, that this is all we have available to us!
Oh, I said to myself, I want to support the industry. I wanted to buy my DVDs. But you know what? You can only get the first 8 episodes on DVD! I really enjoyed the dub of "Cyborg 009", and I want to see all of it. But I can't! There are a group of episodes in the middle of the series that I just cannot get my hands on! Nevermind the fact that the last episodes were never aired, and I can't seem to find them either.
What about subs, you may ask? Oh, I've seen the available subs of "Cyborg 009". They make my eyeballs bleed. I haven't seen "Engrish" this bad since the 'dark ages' of subbing! It's incomprehensible!
*sigh* Rant over. Miss Biscuit says what we are all thinking, and it's all true. And it makes me sad, too.

oh I love hearing people's stories in growing as a fan. I was relatively late to the cyborg party too. Well, I watched it casually back in 2003-2004, but not much else. Then March 2009, I was talking with a friend on old cartoons on Toonami, and mentioned Cyborg 009. Realized I never saw the end, so I actually dug it up, and... here I am!
OH YES, I KNOW THIS PAIN!!! I was just shocked that there was nothing better D: But, we TOTALLY NEED 14 subtitling groups doing each new week Naruto episode D<
I am a huge supporter of the industry, I remember the tape trading days pre-anime boom! These need to be available... somehow D:

Well, on torrentz and megaupload and rapidshare (.com) they can be downloaded all, you just need to know how to look for the episode in order to find them or the right one and registrate in order to get a little more time, it's free but you got to download them one by one. There many, and some are in spanish too. I got all the 51 from the last version from Ishinomori's work. I was downloading the last 10 eps. from the 1979 series, but i had to let go due that i ran out of CDs to store them.
