The trio so ventured on without Birdie.
"I still feel sorry, we left Birdie behind.", Caligula sighed after a while, as they headed through the forest, down to the big lake.
"Aw, c'mon, he probably sniffed a moment longer and then found himself a ton of other foals to comfort him and to play with, y'know how he is.", Mustache said, trying to calm his friend's conscience, the nordanner colt knowing his out-going little brother usually never stayed alone for long.
"Yeah, when we come back, he'll probably have some big hunked talked into beating us up!", Fever joked.
At that also Caligula had to laugh. Maybe he really was just worrying too much, for real.

"We gotta go see who slides furthest.", Mustache suggested with a grin, as they exited the forest.
"Yeah! But we gotta be careful not to go to near to the hot spri . . ."
"HEY GUYS!", Fever was interupted by a call from the other side of the lake.
"I FOUND A SHORT-CUT! HA!", it was Birdie, who stood there, his tail held high in triumph.
"You thought you could get rid off meeee, but I was clevereeer!", the little colt teased.

"Birdie! Dad told you to stay home! Why can't you listen?", Mustache huffed.
"You can't tell me anything! I'm waaay cleverer than you are!", Birdie just called back teasing.
"BIRDIE! GET OFF THERE AT.ONCE.", Fever then suddenly screamed, sounding almost hysteric.
all three colts stared at her, the kelpie filly looked play terrified.
"Why should I? You're suuuch baaaaf loooooseeeers!", Birdie called back, giving a little piaffe, prancing on the spot.
"BIRDIE! STOP IT!", Fever screamed again.
"What is it?", Caligula finally asked.

Fever gulped, her eyes still focused on Birdie.
"Listen, Birdie, there's a reason we didn't use the short-cut.", she called, trying hard to sound calmer.
"You're making that up.", Birdie twitched his ears a bit.
"No, Girlie told me not to approch from that side, there are hot springs from the mountains going into the lake there, making the ice thinner than on the rest of the lake. Please, Birdie, come over here now. Slow. And. Careful.", the filly begged.
Birdie seemed to suddenly understand that she was indeed not making this up. Carefully he lifted a hoof . . .
