Description
Revisiting an old practice piece, cleaning it up a bit while trying to keep that rough charm. Something new to add to my updated 2D Reel.50 frames animated in CS5 on the ol' Cintiq. Ain't nothin' to it but to do it.

How have you post this? I have a animated picture too, but I can't post it.

I like penspinning. And your hand and pen moves very good. Good work, man!

Thanks! I tried to reference the proper movements as much as possible, and it's always gratifying when someone who actually knows the skills recognizes it. I'd say the biggest cheat is that I'm not using a long enough pen in the anims, but what good is animation if we can't trick the impossible into something believable?

I think your pen is long enough. Of course in real life it would be dificult to make tricks with it, but it's still possible. You're welcome. I really was impressed by your penspinning animations. Keep up awesome work, man!

I just got into my Animation class, so I've gotta ask, did you draw all 50 frames on paper, then scan them and fix it digitally, or did you do all the frames on your Cintiq?

All drawn in the Cintiq, with Photoshop. It's principally the same as drawing to paper, but without the mess or the headaches of registration that come with old-school pegbars. Set up a couple Actions that let you view the previous/next frames, and then add frames on new Layers. Make sure you keep the Layers well-organized (usually by numbering) and import the PSD into AfterEffects as a Composition. Then shift the drawings into place on the timeline (use the Keyframe Assistant to set up the initial stack) and you're in business.
Alternatively, you can export an image sequence and import into Flash, Toonboom, RETAS or whatever your compositing program of choice happens to be.

Power through. There's a lot of good to learn from paper/pencil process, and it'll make you that much stronger when you move on to a digital workflow. Remember, the process and techniques I used for this (and many of the other animated work you see in my reel) are entirely the same as those you're dealing with when animating on paper and the light table. It's only the tools that change.

But it's just sooooooooo annoying. Plus, I don't live close to the school, and I don't have money to get a light table or the other tools, so I have to commute 2 hours to school and use the equipment, then go to work (where I'm interning so I'm not getting any money yet), then go home and complete the homework for my OTHER two classes, and show up for school the NEXT DAY. By the end, I'm exhausted. Then I have to deal with my three other siblings on my off days

excellent indeed, some of the timing might be a big exaggerated but it still works indeed.

Photoshop, AfterEffects, practice. It's basic, traditional frame-by-frame animation so PS is just the drawing platform, AE just the compositor. It's not really different from using paper/pencil/camera.

Nope, not a chance.
I can roll a coin across my knuckles (gold dollar coins work great), for whatever that's worth.
