Description
Weird isn’t it...how much a small bird can have to say for our perception of a Holliday.
And how much a migratory pattern can affect that.
I have a feeling I have written about this before.
Numerous times even.
It interests me you see.
There was a time when I didn’t even know that the European robin, Erithacus rubecula, was associated with Christmas.
Drawn, and painted on Christmas cards.
I mean, it certainly fits.
Small, round, cute.
With the colour red prominently featured on its body.
Probably quite normal on bird feeders in the middle of winter.
I say probably.
I wouldn’t know you see.
I have never seen it.
The European robin isn’t a big fan of the Scandinavian winter.
Finds it too cold.
So in winter it goes on a little vacation south.
Not far south.
Just not here.
So all my life I associated the Eurasian bullfinch with those same Christmas cards.
As did everyone around me.
Still do.
Which is in and of it self interesting, seeing as the bullfinch is prevalent in all the same areas where European robin is. And outside too.
So why the robin?
And not he bullfinch?
Who decided in the robin?
Good question.
I guess the robin is cuter.

Haha, yes, actually my area's winter bird is the bullfinch like you see in the picture. But the european robin is sneaking its way onto immagery never the less. They are not here during the winter so it makes no sense at all...
I think other area's winter birds is not something people commonly think about. What ever is normal in our area probably seems so logical that nothing else makes sense to us.
