My take on Data of Next Generation, part of my Trek Redesign effort. The eyes and skin-tone were what signaled Data being an android, so I pushed that a bit further. I also figured that since it's his positron brain was the thing that made Data special, I figured Data's creator, Dr. Soong would want to show that off a bit.Related content

I think my redesign would definitely lean more towards looking human, The Bioplast sheeting that makes up his skin would be translucent resulting in being able to just barely see the artificial muscle structure, the idea being if you picture his face as a 3D model, you would be able to see the edge loops going around his eyes nose and mouth.

This certainly looks interesting.. however, I don't think Dr. Soong would want to show off Data's brain like that.. as I understand it, he wanted Data to be as human-like as possible. Besides, I think the things Data can do (excluding his great strength) show us the power of the posotronic brain quite nicely.
The eyes, though.. are absolutely perfect! Not only are they beautiful, I think less life-like eyes are more realistic.
Regardless of Soong's opinion, this design is cool!

Thanks! But I don't think I agree with you regarding Soong's intent. I do believe he wanted Data to be human-like in his mental development and his behavior, but if he wanted Data to pass for human, he would have built him that way. It seems that it would have been relatively easy with the technology available to make Data's skin and eyes more human and to have him blend in with the rest of humanity. But that's not what he did. Either Data was purposefully designed to stand out, or his aesthetics were entirely a secondary concern. Soong's true breakthrough was the success of the positronic brain not the physicality of the android body. It's Data's sentience, not his strength, that make him special. And considering how he was ridiculed as 'Often Wrong' Soong, I think he would absolutely want to show that breakthrough off. Which is why I did.
